Campus Security Good, Hanover Police Awful
Campus security (Safety and Security, aka S&S) is pretty good, they usually aren't too strict. If you are clearly drunk and might need some help, they send you to dicks house or they will respond to a call (a "Good Sam") asking for their help. Neither gets you in legitimate trouble. They do put fraternities on probation, however, fairly frequently.
Hanover police, however, are a completely different story. They seem to do anything they can to get dartmouth kids in trouble (probably because they don't have anything else to do). They will literally drive around looking for any drunk person they can find. I know many, many kids who have been arrested for drinking. They also conduct drug stings. Everyone hates hpo and the chief is constantly mocked by students.

Awful, With a Few Golden Days Thrown in
Do NOT be fooled by your tour day. Most Dartmouth students are fairly convinced that admissions schedules the majority of tours for days they know will be beautiful. The weather is crummy for the most of the time. -30 days in the winter, lots of cloudy days, overall cold weather. that said, there are some absolutely beautiful days in the late spring and early fall terms. But for the most time, it is fairly miserable. A lot of kids have "happy lamps" to make up for the lack of sunshine.

Tradition
Tradition sums up Dartmouth. A lot of students joke that the old school alums refuse to let the school move past its ultraconservative, all-boys, animal house reputation. I have had multiple friends visit Dartmouth, and they all look around bewildered at pretty much everything that goes on here. Greek life is DOMINANT (about 70% of soph-seniors are in it... its a huge, huge deal), boys rule the school (literally and figuratively), there is a clear tension with gender and sexual assault issues (no matter whose "side" youre on), and there is a lot more binge drinking than one would expect at an ivy league. The administration caters almost exclusively to alumni input, and there is a strooong disconnect between the students and the administration. There are some awesome traditions, including DOC trips, orientation activities, green key, the homecoming bonfire, etc. But traditions of the social life and "power structure" here are unlike anything I have heard of elsewhere. It is very intense and it caters to the whims of white, affiliated, male athletes. That is awesome and fun for some people and miserable for others. Its just a preference thing.
