Comparing Programs

Although you don't get as intense of training as with the BFA acting or Musical Theatre programs, sometimes the flexibility I have with the BA Acting program is worth it. I've had the opportunity to study abroad, go to Emerson's LA campus and intern in casting, do other extracurriculars on-campus and have more of a social life. That said, while I feel more well rounded, I feel less trained in my field. The faculty is really hit or miss with actors too versus the musical theatre program (which has the best instructors all around). The first two years you don't get much of a choice with who you have, so it's kind of luck of the draw on who gets the amazing teachers. I've never felt overworked though, it's the extracurriculars that pile up. Musical theatre is much more intense than any other program though. Don't let Emerson sell you on their theaters though, because while they're great for admissions, you'll more than likely never perform on them. They tend to cast the same few people in all the main-stage shows and rarely use the flagship Majestic and Paramount theatres because they're used by professional companies most of the year.

Athletics at Emerson College

Quidditch Is Big?

While my girlfriend plays softball and thus is really into the athletics here/knows the other teams and players...very few people outside of the athletes care/support athletics. We have a nice gym though. I think it would be better to have some kind of incentive system to get to games and support the teams, cause right now it's mostly just family or close friends. The biggest/most talked about sport isn't even real. We have a Quidditch team that competes in Middlebury for the world cup and ranked 2nd this year and I know a lot of people who play it as an intramural sport. Otherwise, I can barely see anyone going out to the Common to organize an game of baseball, basketball, and least of all football...we don't have a football team for a reason...there's no interest as much as I would like there to be (I'm originally from Gainesville, FL home of the Gators)

Drug Safety at Emerson College

B-

You Can Avoid It

I never really hear about hard-core drugs. A fair amount of the population has at least done pot, and a sizable amount do regularly, but there's no smoking in or around the dorms, so you don't have to get mixed up in it if you don't want to. Drinking is big, though technically it's not allowed on campus...it's done anyway just with any other school. The only thing that's pretty much un-avoidable are cigarettes. They say at Emerson if you don't take up smoking or turn gay by the end of your four years, you get your money back...I occasionally partake in the former.
