Campus Housing at Boston College

A

Lots of Options, Above Average

Dorm life at BC is either hit or miss. For freshman, Upper is the place to be. Anyone who says Newton campus "isn't that bad" is a liar. They live 2 miles away from campus and have to take the bus to and from class. The best dorms on Upper are either CLXF or Fitzpatrick/Gonzaga, since they are the biggest dorms (with about 500 students in each). Most pregames go down in these dorms. Kostka is generally considered the worst because it's all girls, has no study lounge and no laundry rooms.

Sophomores really want an 8 man suite in either Vandy or 90. Really unlucky sophomores live on College Road (CoRo) in traditional doubles right near Upper campus. Most juniors live off campus but those that live on campus are guaranteed housing in either townhouses or suites. These are new and updated, especially Gabelli and Voute and all have air conditioning, kitchens, etc. For seniors, the Mods are the place to be. These are basically houses on campus with a lawn, where lots of dance parties happen on the weekends. But if you don't have a mod, I guess that works too because you can just visit other peoples mods and don't have to deal with the mess afterwards. Seniors have apartment style housing on campus, with kitchens, a living room, and 2 bathrooms. So they really can't complain.

Basically, housing is above average at BC, except for the unlucky freshmen on Newton and sophomores on CoRo

Campus Strictness at Boston College

C

VERY STRICT

The RAs in freshman dorms are on the look out for underage drinking/pregames in dorms. You can get written up for just being in the same room as alcohol, even if you weren't drinking, weren't planning on drinking, and didn't know there was alcohol in the room. Getting written up isn't that big of a consequence however, because you meet with your Resident Director and get to explain yourself/make excuses. Usually, it ends well and you don't get in trouble. If you get written up a lot, it's rare that any real consequences are involved. Most people just get asked to write a paper on why it's bad to drink/possess alcohol if you're underage. BC will also make you meet with someone and get lectured on why it's bad to drink, etc.

Also, for off-campus parties, there are off campus RAs! They have the right to enter your party and break it up. BCPD is a bitch when it comes to breaking up parties. Somehow, they ALWAYS know where the party is and most get broken up.

Health & Safety at Boston College

A+

Very Safe and Secure Campus

I've never felt unsafe at BC. Our school is located in a very wealthy, safe suburb of Boston, so obviously the crime rate isn't bad. Walking back from the library or a party late at night is not intimidating or scary at all. BCPD is always around in case of emergencies and we have the Blue Light system like many colleges. If you press the button a police officer is guaranteed to be there withing 2 minutes.

Athletics at Boston College

B-

Lack of Support for Athletics

I really wish there was more athletic support on campus. Football games are attending just for the tailgate, and many students don't even make it to the game. Those that do tend to leave before half time so the student section looks empty and kind of a joke.

Lots of students attend the hockey games since BC is nationally ranked. The BC vs BU rivalry is lots of fun.

Basketball games are notoriously empty, but a new student group Donohue's Disciplies, is trying to bring back spirit to the games.

Transportation at Boston College

A+

BC Shuttle Is Great

The BC Shuttle is a fast and easy way for students to get around campus. It makes rounds throughout BC and brings students near off campus houses or to Cleveland Circle, where lots of restaurants/shops are and it brings you near the D and C lines for the train.

The bus is very reliable and most students have the app TransLoc on their phones. It tracks the bus and gives you an estimate of how long till it gets to a certain stop. It's always pretty accurate. One downside to the buses is they tend to get really crowded and students have to stand up, but it's a short ride and usually manageable. The bus also runs back and forth from Newton to main campus

Computers at Boston College

A+

Great Tech Support

The campus technology center is really helpful and always solves any problem you have with your computer. Most students at BC have Macs. I would say it's necessary to have a computer because lots of kids take notes on them, and obviously for writing papers it's easier to have your own computer.

Nightlife at Boston College

A

Not a Party School, but Still Lots of Fun

Since there are no frats/sororities at BC, there's not usually "one big party" but lots of medium sized parties. Finding where the party is tends to be a challenge for some, but it definitely helps to know people!!! Thursdays, nothing happens on campus because most students go to the bars, like Who's on First, Cantab, White Horse, etc. So you definitely need a fake ID. Mary Ann's is supposedly hard to get into and is mostly seniors. Some students go out multiple times during the week especially if bars/clubs are hosting events.

It definitely costs a lot of money to go out to the bars, between cab rides, bar tabs, and cover charges/tickets for events. So if you're a girl, find a guy to pay for your cab and don't pay for your own drinks! If you're a guy, start saving $$ now.

During the weekend, most fun parties happen off campus. Students usually pre game in their dorms or 8 mans. As a freshman, it's sooo important to have your "crew" of about 5 people.

Another thing I love about BC is that it's sooo close to Boston. It's so easy to take the T into Boston for dinner or shopping, especially Quincy market. And since it's a huge city, lots of bands/popular singers play shows in Boston throughout the year, which is fun and switches it up from the usual campus party scene.

While BC is definitely NOT a party school, a majority of the population DOES drink and enjoy partying. It's so easy to find alcohol whenever you want, but you will definitely encounter the people who are boring and limit the amount they drink because they have a test or whatever. Lame

Drug Safety at Boston College

B+

Alcohol and Pot

Alcohol is obviously the most popular and most abundant drug of choice at BC. Lots of students do enjoy smoking pot. If you're looking for it, you will most definitely find it in large quantities. Marijuana is de-criminalized in Massachusetts, so if you get caught smoking by Boston Police, you'll probably just get a warning or have to pay a small fine. If you get caught by BCPD, however, you're screwed. I've never heard of anyone get caught for smoking, but i can imagine the consequences are bad..

Also, there's a population of students who takes Adderall to study better or do work. I've heard rumors that the 5th floor of O'Neill is the place to go for any drug you want, and you can find it.
