Off-Campus Housing
So basically it depends on how much you're willing to spend on off-campus housing. There are many choices, especially north of campus behind Van R. The only place I wouldn't recommend is between 33rd and 32nd on Powelton, many of the houses aren't the best looking things internally nor externally, though almost everything nearby has been lived in by college students, so good luck.

Not Required Freshman Year
The greek life is very vibrant and seems to attract many to it. Though at this point in time, I do not feel like it is necessarily required. I've had a lot of exciting times with my floor of my dorm and very few of us have joined fraternities for this reason. I see the greek life as something more enthralling sophomore year or one of the other upperclassmen levels.

Don't be alarmed by the one strike penalty on marijuana at this school. There are designated places around campus that have seemed to become the haven for "drug" use. Though it's deemed safe because as long as you have fun there, public safety will not care, administration will not care, you're not hurting anyone but yourself and the school is liberal enough to think that. Just be careful when parents come, they tend to call the police sometimes and have the real police show up.
