Rainy and Cloudy
It's Washington, so it is rainy and/or cloudy for at least 9 months out of the year. Summer 2011 didn't start until the first week of August, and ended not 6 weeks later. If you are solar powered, this is not the state for you unless you are in Eastern Washington.

Psych Major Is Very Research Focused
I'm a nontraditional aged student in the UW Psychology BA program. This program is very research focused, because UW is very research focused. If you are looking for a program that is more counseling related, this is not for you. However, a BA in Psychology is usually a stepping stone to a higher degree for a counseling or therapy career. The program at UW is widely respected in the U.S., and well known for top researchers and professors. Although I am not going in to research, I really appreciate the classes and focus because it is a very important foundation. Like many programs, you will get out of it as much as you put in. There are ample opportunities for internships, or even making your own independent internship.

Variety of Internships & You Can Create Your Own!
I'm a nontraditional aged student, which means I'm just older and have many years of work experience. Most internships here at UW are geared for those with no work experience, which I understand, but that doesn't help me learn or network. I am in the BA Psychology program, and worked with an advisor to create my own independent internship. The field that I want to go in after college is very specialized, so I found a therapist in my city who is doing the work I want to do one day. I wrote an independent contract with him for an unpaid summer internship, and got credits at UW for it too. I have no advice for pay, but time commitment varies depending on the internship you do. Responsibilities also vary widely. Just ask a lot of questions of your advisor, and the person who interviews you for the internship. My best advice if you are working and going to college, is to be careful about your workload if you add an internship. I find that summer is easier to work full time, take one summer class, and do a very part time internship.

Psych Major - Competitive Admissions
Your GPA for required Psychology classes are critical, but not the only thing they look at. Beyond that, it is important on the application to clearly and concisely impart your motivation and a bit of your biography. The application process for the Psychology major is fairly standard. This major is very competitive, but you can apply in later quarters if you did not get in the first time you applied.
