Life on Campus Is Awesome!
Living on campus builds a really strong sense of community here at Pitzer College. In my opinion, all the dorms are worth living in. Holden and Mead halls give you the best old-school Pitzer vibe - there's something really endearing about the age factor. I'm not a fan of the newer dorms that were constructed recently. I feel they're a little sterile and demonstrate how Pitzer's trying too hard to become the other colleges.

There Is No Greek Life
What's awesome about Pitzer is that there is no Greek life - that's not something we do. Pitzer is so small it already has a sense of community without feeling like it needs to be forced.

Highs and Lows, Nothing in Between
It's December 2nd it's it's still about 70 degrees outside. The weather tends to focus on the extremes - in the summer, around May-September it can be as high as 110 degrees; at nights in the colder months (November-March) it dips to around 40. There isn't really a fall or spring in Claremont; the weather tends to go from suddenly cold to suddenly hot. Claremont's really dry, but when it does rain (maybe a few days out of the whole year), it pours. Bring some sunglasses and a lot of sunscreen.

Academics Are Great
Pitzer professors tend to be very laid back, depending on who you get. They're very easy to approach and are super willing to give you one-on-one time if you need it. The best thing about Pitzer is that it is surrounded by the other Claremont Colleges, so you can takes classes from other schools. Professors from all the colleges tend to be very approachable and seem to really care about your academic well-being. Depending on your professor, a lot of professors are also strong advocates of thinking outside the box. Reading can be a bit heavy, and some professors don't seem to understand you have other classes besides theirs! For the most part, though, I feel like the education is worth the tuition.

Learning Is Fun
I'm a psychology and gender/feminist studies double major. Pitzer's psychology department is pretty awesome; the latter not so much. Pretty Safe
First off, Claremont is a town where there is very little crime and you can feel super, super safe. Campus is the same - I think people tend to respect each other enough. Sometimes a bike will get stolen, or someone will graffiti a wall or something. Campus security is constantly patrolling the grounds, though, and I've never felt insecure.

Bring Your Own Computer
It's definitely best if you bring your own computer, but there is a computer lab. However they just made it much smaller, so it can get a little crowded in there. Pitzer has wi-fi all over campus and in the classrooms, and the network speed is pretty fast and reliable. You can print from the computer lab, and remote printing is also available.

There's a Lot of Choice
Dining hall food tends to be very repetitive, but it's great because you can go to other colleges to eat any meal with your meal plan. All the dining halls are buffet style, so you can eat as much as you want. You also get flex dollars depending on the meal plan you're on - these can be used to buy food from any of the stores on campus. The Claremont Colleges offer a lot of choice, all within walking distance. Everything is very convenient.

There's a Variety, but You Usually Need a Car
The village has a wide range of restaurants at a walkable distance, and these range from relatively cheap (maybe $5 a person) to the expensive ($20 a person). There is Mexican, Mediterranean, Indian, Italian, American, French, and a few places to go for yogurt or ice cream. If you have a car, you can go into the city of Pomona to get some authentic Mexican and Vietnamese food. I recommend Rocco's Pizza on Monte Vista and Moreno (large pizza starting at $4.99!) and the Sanamluang thai cafe on San Bernardino and Indian Hill.

It's Mostly Seniors That Live Off Campus
If you live off-campus, it's best to have a car or a bike at the very least. There's a wide range of prices for housing - the apartments closest to campus (within a block or two) are priced like the dorms (about $1000/month).

Pitzer Loves Diversity
Although Pitzer is 80% Caucasian, our community is very welcoming and tolerant of minorities. I cannot express just how much everyone respects each other. I love it! There are groups for ethnic minorities to join if they feel they need support or community. Pitzer is so open to everything and really embraces diverse thinking.

"Hippies With Beamers"
Pitzer is slowly transitioning from a hippie to a hipster school. We're super creative, artsy, musical, and thrifty. Not so much athletic, although there is a small subgroup that loves the gym. Most people have a hipster look, with skinny jeans and Converse.

We're Not So Big on Athletics
Athletics makes up a minority of Pitzer students. However, you can participate in sports with the neighboring colleges.

There's Usually Stuff Going on
The Claremont Colleges are pretty small, but there's usually some form of drinking going on. The weekends are great for 5-C parties, and drinks tend to be free (Harvey Mudd does great with hard alcohol). Pitzer parties tend to be smaller and Pitzer-oriented - they're usually small concerts at the Grove House or at the Gold Student Center. We get a lot of Pitzer bands to play; there's always a keg and everyone loves to hippie dance to a good time.

You Usually Get It If You Need It
Financial aid is always a hassle to deal with, but if you get everything in you are likely to get a decent financial aid package.

Pitzer's Got What You Need
We've got a pool, student center, gym, mail center, two art galleries, and a quiet library you can study in. If Pitzer doesn't have what you need, you can find it somewhere at the Claremont Colleges. In addition, most of the surrounding colleges have their own pools, gyms, and eateries you can access as well.

Pitzer Is So Chill
I'm at my fourth year at Pitzer and I've loved every minute of it. From the first day of freshman orientation, you can tell that most people are so chill and respectful of each other. We're a very hipster, artsy, and creative school with a knack for community engagement and social activism. I think the classes we offer are also very reflective of these ideologies. Sadly with the dwindling economy and increased competition for college applicants, Pitzer's original hippie spirit is slowly being eradicated. However we still set ourselves apart by being good, socially aware people who are super warm, welcoming, and accepting. You really feel a sense of community here.

Claremont Can Be a Bit Dull
Claremont is a college town that caters to the White, middle-class crowd. Definitely buy a bike or maybe bring your car when you are here - all the interesting stuff is not within walking distance, and public transportation is a bit of a hassle. Claremont's "downtown" village tends to be a fifteen-to-twenty minute walk from Pitzer and has restaurants (varying in price), some dessert places, expensive clothing stores (including an American Apparel), a record store, and a Metrolink that goes from San Bernardino to Los Angeles. Locals are polite and friendly people who often know each other. There are also plenty of malls, restaurants, and movie theaters within twenty-minute drives.

Not Too Strict
Most people will participate in some sort of illegal activity on a regular basis and not suffer any consequences if they are *smart* about subtlety. It's very easy for underage individuals to drink and people are constantly smoking pot and cigarettes in their rooms. Often if you get written up you are subjected to some hours of 'community service' which can be completed quite easily, e.g. decorating a bulletin board with whatever you want. In general alcohol is provided at parties because the school would rather know that students are drinking safely on campus rather than out somewhere at a random place.

We Love Weed
Of the Claremont Colleges, Pitzer has a reputation for housing all the potheads. It's great! Marijuana is a very social activity and there is never a shortage in demand nor supply. Pitzer often has a weekly Wednesday "Smoke Force" that, if executed correctly, will not entail people getting busted. Alcohol is always provided at parties and it's fairly easy to just show them your ID for beer(even if you're underage). Occasionally someone is selling psychedelics and during exam time, people will sell their Adderol or Ritalin pills.

It's Starting to Get Crowded
Now that more and more people are applying to Pitzer, parking is beginning to get difficult. Usually you can find a spot in the larger parking lot, but it does take a few minutes of cruising around to find a spot, especially during peak times.

Bring a Bike
Claremont is a college town, so there isn't much around. Public transportation is quite inconvenient (although moderately priced), so most people bike around town. The village is a fifteen-minute walk away, so your legs will come in handy. If you're looking for things other than a record store, some restaurants, or the Metrolink, it's best to use a car. Most malls and movie theaters are within a twenty-minute drive. Also a warning - LA is NOT that close - it's a 45-minute drive or over an hour on the train. Late-night transportation is non-existent unless you have a personal car.
