Rosemont College Diversity had a new discussion posted by dream24680

I live in this area - mostly rich white folk. Why are there so many minorities at Rosemont? I don't have a problem with it, I am black, just wondering. Thanks!

it isnt all rich white folk, there are a lot of middle class families that live near this area. Rosemont is so diverse because it used to be an all girl school and they want it to be a school that everyone would like to go to.

How is the honors program?

It's great! I'm in the honors program currently and I was worried about it too, but I've made so many friends here in the programs and have really branched out because of it. I highly recommend it!

Because there is a small amount of students, do you ever find it annoying (especially after 4 years) being around the same people and faces and not having a wider variety?

It depends on your personality. I get frustrated at times because of the lack of diversity, so it does feel like I'm around the same people all the time, but if you're the kind of extrovert who loves to interact with as many people as possible, the best thing to do is reach out to the minorities and other peoplr of interrst. You also need to remember, every year a class leaves and a new class comes in, so that adds dome spice to campus life!

Never. New people are coming in every year, and honestly it's comforting to know people, rather than constantly being surrounded by strangers. Besides, we're a really diverse campus - it's not a sea of faces that all look the same.

Do you guys "look down on people" for not being SDA?

I don't know too many people who do look down on people for not being SDA, for the most part this is a pretty accepting campus. We come from all walks of life. Not everyone here is SDA, some come simply because it is a good school.

No, most people have that perception but in reality 40% of our students are not SDA and to be honest i cant even tell the difference because once you get to Andrews we are one big family.

Are most of the students rich?

Not all of them, there certainly is a majority, but don't let that intimidate you. Us less fortunate tend to find one another eventually.

no, everyone I know is either paying for school with loans or scholarships

Not particularly, like all schools they have some rich people.

I like this school but I see that they assign you a job. What kind of work do you guys have to do?

The labor position that you have to do varies, but you have to work the required 10 hours a week. THe job you do can be anything from cleaning one of the office building to gardening outside to working with the hogs on the farm to working in the college bookstore like me. You are usually assigned to your labor position based on your interests or past experiences. I requested to work in the bookstore even though I had no prior experience and that's where they put me. Most of the jobs aren't too bad, but a lot of freshman get stuck as facilities assistants, which is another way of saying janitor. They also stick a lot of people in the cafeteria. The labor program here is overall pretty nice. The supervisors are very cooperative with your schedule and this is the only work college where you get paid money outside of your scholarship earnings for the work you do. You only start out earning $4 an hour, but that's better than it could be. If you have any more questions about the college let me know. You can email me at fraileyk@berea.edu. I'm only a freshman, but I can probably answer most of your questions.

Janitorial duties, paperwork filing, just odds and ends stuff. Some take care of the animals on the farm.

What is the dorms like without a/c. How hot does it get there? Is there any heating?

Are roaches commonly seen in the dorms? Note that I'm from PA and I'm not a fan of the creepy crawlies.

No

Not that often.

None. The dorms are very clean

Are students mostly Democrats or Republicans? I noticed that the rankings are kind of half and half. Thanks!

It's mostly Democratic but everyone is pretty accepting of your choices.

I am not really certain! I've noticed it weighted heavily on both sides.

it really is half and half and there's a lot of activities, clubs, or events where you can voice these opinions.

Honestly, I think it really is half and half. Both sides have chances to be heard and it is not a forced issue where you have to pick a side. You grow and develop here, you may not pick a side but end up floating somewhere in the middle.

So I noticed that a non-Mormon has to pay more tuition. How would the admission office know whether or not you were a Mormon? Thanks!

You have to have an interview with a Mormon leader before you can get into BYU. Plus there are records of the people who are mormon so they would be able to look it up.

If you are a Mormon there are other forms that you have to enter with your application from the church leaders as part of the recommendation process. If you are not a Mormon you do not have to send in these forms.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains records of all of it's members. Also, you would have to get an endorsement for your home ward bishop and if you are not a member they would know.

You have to have an interview with the local Bishop if you are a member.

They expect you to be honest. And you have to have an endorsement sent in from your Bishop.

You need an ecclesiastical endorsement before being accepted, i.e., you need an endorsement from a religion leader. The Church keeps a membership record, so there's no way of meeting with an LDS bishop/stake president and saying you're Mormon.

On your application you put down a religion and all students need an ecclesiastical endorsement from a church leader.

The church had records of members and I'm sure the school has access to that

Hi! I'm an African American natural redhead from the East Coast, non-mormon, and a democrat. Although I love the LDS values. Would I stick out a lot? Also, I noticed that there's hardly any blacks at BYU. Would I have to worry about racism if I went there? Thanks!!

BYU is one of the safest and best college towns around. I wouldn't worry about racism AT ALL, most LDS people are welcoming and non-discriminatory. I highly recommend this school!

Hysterical.

You will be fine. LDS normally respect everyone.

Of course not. The environment at BYU is very positive and excepting. You wouldn't have a problem there

hey! I'm from the east coast too applying to byu :) so if anyone tries being racist to ya i'll go kick their butt.

Byu is a welcoming school and the students there are awesome they would take you right in!

I also am a minority ethnically (hispanic) and politically (libertarian), and have never run into any problems. There is a Democrat club on campus. As long as you respect the honor code, you'll be fine.

No, I don't think so. Everyone is super open and accepting. Sometimes they are a little ignorant but not in a malicious way. There are all races and religions there.

As a African American student going to BYU I have not had any problems because of my race. I do get weird looks sometime(and I don't look weird or do weird things)as I walk around campus. Some kids are ignorant but that's just because they haven't been exposed.

Just so you know, there is some pressure for non-LDS to convert so you would have to deal with that from some people.
