Athens has typical Georgia weather -- hot and humid in the summers, cool (but usually not freezing) in the winter. When school starts in August, the first couple weeks are usually pretty miserable due to the heat. But it quickly turns nice in late September into October. Once the weather turns nice, everyone is hanging outside. People often walk or ride bikes on campus. If it ever does snow or ice in the winter, class is almost always canceled -- even if there's just the threat of bad weather.

Athens is a fantastic college town. It has a great music scene (there are always bands playing somewhere downtown) and lots of fun local shops to go to in Five Points or downtown. Of course, sports is huge at UGA -- there is always something to go see, whether its gymnastics, basketball or football -- which dominates most Saturdays during the fall in Athens. It's close enough to Atlanta that you can go there for a concert, museum, etc, and drive back the same day. If you like to go out, you will find no shortage of bars and clubs downtown. Campus is pretty safe, but I wouldn't walk around late at night by yourself. But that's kind of a given in most places.
