Theoretically Great
Though there was clearly a lot of consideration put into dining at Duke, in my experience, it never turns out quite as good as it looks. There are a good number of options for those who live on West campus, but Central and East are pretty lacking in variety. There aren't many inexpensive food opportunities, either.

I'm Going to Duke for Free
Something I didn't realize until after I received my financial aid package is that if your family annual income is under $50,000, there is no parental contribution! Unfortunately, the student contribution is based on your reported earnings, so part-time jobs actually end up hurting you. I can't get a paid job for the next four years without increasing my student contribution.

Sports Dominated World
Sports are a huge deal and there is a lot of student support, especially for basketball obviously. Varsity athletes' lives are completely different from other students'. They have four hour practices most days of the week, and have to put it in extreme amounts of time, which makes them inaccessible to other students.

Mild, Can't Complain
There isn't air conditioning in a lot of dorms, so when it's hot, it's very very hot. When it's cold outside, though, it's still hot inside because they crank up the heat and there's no way to turn it down.

Administration, What Administration?
The freshmen dorms are "dry" and that is strictly enforced for the most part, but upperclassmen are free to do pretty much anything. There have been some limitations put on the social scene recently, (the end of tailgate, etc.) but for the most part, it isn't too strict.

Parking, Not as Awful as the Bus System
From friends' stories about other campuses, Duke has a comparatively good parking system. It is confusing, and there are a lot of tickets given out for being one or two spaces away from the "correct" area, even when the spaces aren't marked, but for the most part it is not too much of a hassle to park. Having a car doesn't help much get between campuses, unfortunately, since the bus system is literally the most agonizing part about Duke.

Durham Food
That's the majority of the attraction of Durham to Duke students- the various restaurants. There are probably lots of cultural events, and other things to do, but most Duke students don't leave the bubble that is Duke unless it's to go to area nightclubs.

Terrible bus system
On an average day, I spend at least an hour waiting for or riding on buses to get between campuses. Duke has West campus (the main campus), East (where freshmen live), and Central (apartments for upperclassmen). Budget cuts have made the buses run less frequently, and when they do they are overcrowded to the point where a simple bus ride can be a miserable experience.
