Absolutely Fantastic
Academics at Bard College are most definitely superior to other schools. Bard is very unique in that it is filled with people who thrive on learning. The professors are incredibly intelligent, very active researchers in their field, there are many renown professors in the world of academia, and they are extremely helpful. It has been known as a artsy school, but the science and math department are absolutely wonderful, and there is a lot of individual attention to the students. If you are someone who loves learning, then Bard is the place for you. Your time at Bard is set up in a way for you to become a truly well-rounded intellectual. Bard is very active in civic-engagement and globally, so there are many opportunities to choose from. There is certainly a lot of work, but that is what college is supposed to be about. It isn't anything that is a waste of time though. All freshman are required to complete a three week program called "Language & Thinking." In this program, you have a professor (they come from all over...mine was from Columbia University), and you are given an anthology of texts such as Herodotus, Montaigne, Kafka, Hindu and Buddhist texts, Genesis, and many other poets, essayists, philosophers, critics, etc. You do a lot of writing in L&T, which makes you much better. By the end of L&T you write a ten page humanist essay based on the many texts we read in class. I found that this was nothing by a great experience, and it was a wonderful foundation to prepare me for the workload in college. When I was first registering for classes I was a little frustrated about the distribution requirements, but I have enjoyed the classes so much, and I find them so interesting. Your undergraduate years shouldn't be about doing what you want to do, because no one knows exactly what they want at this age. It is important to explore different fields, and even if the class has nothing to do with your major, everything is connected in someway and will be useful in your future.
