Computers at Stetson University

B+

24 Hour Library Lab and No Printing Fees

There are computers everywhere! The 24 hour lab (lovingly referred to as "the dungeon") is pretty popular. Also, you can use your student ID to get into the computer lab in Sage Hall (where the science students live). You really don't need your own printer either. Don't waste your money on ink. Just walk to a computer lab when you need to print your paper at 3 AM. If you don't want to walk, call P-safe and they will take you in a golf cart. Your chariot awaits :)

Facilities at Stetson University

A

My Home= the TRI-C

Ok people, Stetson has awesome facilities (especially if you know where to look.) I could talk about the library, or the pool, or the student union, but quite frankly I don't want to! I will talk about the facility that really matters to me. Say it with me: "Tri-C." What is the Tri-C? The Cross Cultural Center is it's official name, but I usually just call it "home" or "heaven." It's a little house on campus with sitting areas, TV, video games, and a few computers. Many of the clubs hold meetings at the Tri-C. For those of you who love to have intellectual discussions, come make some friends at the Tri-C. Want a bagel? Come get a bagel and some Nutella out of the fridge at the Tri-C. Having a Christma-hana-kwanzica party? Just reserve the Tri-C. Stop by the Tri-C for a tour. I'm telling you, it's a hidden gem.

Diversity at Stetson University

B+

The Reason Why I Love Stetson!

My first impression of Stetson's diversity was really negative, and I was afraid that there wouldn't be much diversity of any kind. Boy was I mistaken! I'm a student org junkie, and we have an org for everything and everyone. Yeah, there are a lot of white students at Stetson but there are more ways to be diverse than race. We have many religions represented, tons of sexual diversity, and many students from other cultures. The subject of Stetson's Values Day this year was religious diversity. One of the most active club on campus right now is the Kaleidoscope club (our Gay-Straight Alliance.) Last year, one of the most visible and active clubs was CSO (the Caribbean Student Organization). For more info on clubs, search for Stetson Orgsync in Google and view our clubs list.

Parking at Stetson University

B

No Car, No Worries.

It would be nice to have a car for weekend excursions, but really it isn't necessary. Dorms are close enough to your classes, just walk! If you just can't walk, bring your longboard or rent a bike. Stetson offers free bike rentals through the Student Government Association, and they are installing longboard racks on campus. I'm from out of state, so I left my car at home. Almost everyone at Stetson is from Florida. Guess what? They brought their cars. Also, we have commuters. If you do bring your car, get a permit and park where you're supposed to. If you don't, P-Safe will give you a ticket. If you commute: you can usually find parking but you may need to walk a little ways. You will learn where you can park without getting ticketed, and you will get by.

Academics at Stetson University

B+

Not All Programs Are Created Equal, but Most Are Very Good.

Some programs aren't as challenging as others. Stetson is famous for Business, but many students from the Music School and the Arts & Sciences do not respect the business school. You can be a business major and get by without really challenging yourself, but if you rise to the occasion the professors are excellent and they will help you. If you choose to be the best business student that you can be, the world is your oyster. Most programs in the Arts & Sciences are highly respected, and the Music School is nationally known. Music students work very very hard, so if you pursue music you will need to practice and study your butt off. Also, the sciences are very popular (Bio especially). In the Arts, Stetson has excellent Political Science and Russian Studies programs. For these subjects, Stetson really is "the place to be." Across all subjects, professors tend to be dedicated, helpful, and highly qualified. If you come to Stetson as a serious student, you can really take advantage of so many academic opportunities.

Off-Campus Dining at Stetson University

C

Who's Buying?

For your Freshman and Sophomore years, you are forced to have a meal plan. For this reason, I don't go off campus to eat very frequently. If you already have to pay for the meal plan, might as well use it. Of the restaurants in Deland, I have been to Santorini's, Bellini's, Firehouse Subs, Brian's BBQ, Dustin's BBQ, Tony's Pizza, Dominoes, Chili's, Moe's, and the Thai restaurant. Nothing was strikingly good. To be honest, the Thai food sucks. What can you expect though? It was free to me because Stetson paid for an event. I went to Santorini's for free too. Your meal plan points work at Dominoes, so people order it all the time. I HATE DOMINOES. If you want Dominoes, I assure you that you can find it somewhere on campus for free. Go to a movie night, or a club information session, or whatever else is going on. Join a club and host an event and you can get Stetson to pay for Dominoes. Tony's Pizza, Brian's BBQ, and Dustin's BBQ are all good. Let me teach you something- mark my words- the College Christian Fellowship gives free dinner every Thursday night. BE THERE. Dustin's catered one time, and it was awesome. I was so excited! Also, learn this now: FREE FOOD IS EVERYWHERE. MOST OF THOSE RESTAURANTS THAT I LISTED CATER EVENTS AT STETSON. THIS IS HOW I TRIED THEM. GO TO EVENTS AND GRAZE. IF YOU'RE PAYING FOR DINNER, GO TO ORLANDO.

Off-Campus Housing at Stetson University

B

From What I've Seen, It's Not Too Bad.

It's not like there are a ton of cheap apartments right by the campus, but you can find apartments that aren't too far away. As soon as students are allowed to move off campus, they usually do it. Dorms are a total rip off! You can get much more space for cheaper if you rent something. Also, if you have a room mate you can live very cheaply. Want to live off campus? You need transportation. That is a pre-requisite. I guess you could bike to campus, but this could be miserable in the rain.

Local Atmosphere at Stetson University

D+

They Don't Call It Dead-Land for Nothing.

This town is quaint and small, but unfortunately this means that you need to leave it if you want to find something fun to do. If you're a nature buff, you can go Blue Springs Park or Deleon Springs. Also, the beach isn't too far away. If you're looking to party though, look to Orlando or Daytona. Deland is pretty lame. There's one club: Ace of Clubs, and a couple of bars. Deland is really only good because it's close to other fun spots.

Transportation at Stetson University

C

Pro: Free Bikes to Rent. Cons: Airport Shuttle Sucks

Deland is small, and the campus is very easy to get around without a vehicle. I walk everywhere. Cars are nice if you want to go to the beach or to Orlando, but I really don't think it's worth the costs. Stetson will provide you with free bikes through SGA that you can rent for 2 weeks at a time. Unfortunately, when you need to find transportation to the airport, you may run into obstacles. Friends might not want to take the time and spend the gas. Most students are Floridians, so us non-residents are kind of left to fend for ourselves and find our way to the airport. Stetson does offer shuttles at the end of the semester, but they aren't really conveniently scheduled. They want you to be off campus when your finals are over, but the shuttles are scheduled for two days after all of my finals are finished. I will be out of here 2 days before the few shuttles are scheduled.
