Campus Strictness at University of Rochester

B

2 Strike Rule

There's a 2 strike rule, called the "second chance program," for students who get caught breaking the rules. It's really easy to not get caught, though; in freshman dorms you should only break one rule at a time (more than double occupancy plus one in a dorm room, drinking underage, loud music late at night) - RAs do sometimes come around the halls and may notice. If you're out, take care of your friends. If someone is trashed, keep them inside until they can act soberish, or the Student Aides (in blue jackets) will call Mert and ambush you if they need to.

Enough RAs are strict that you want to stay careful. Most of the time, RAs are perfectly fine with letting THEIR students do whatever, but if they are down a different hall or if the student is somewhere where the RA doesn't know them, that's when people run into trouble.

Mert is the student medical group on campus, and they mostly just make sure drunk kids are going to be alright. The only problem there is that their confidentiality doesn't extend to the administration, so getting merted - while usually not common - is the most common way to get a strike.

Weather at University of Rochester

Nice

So far, the weather has been lovely - sunny and, until about two weeks ago, very warm. It's really windy; I wasn't expecting that. Otherwise, snow is supposed to come within the next week or so, and about half of the campus is really excited.

Work With You

I didn't receive any financial aid from any of the 7 colleges I was accepted to, but when my parents and I talked to my financial aid adviser, she understood our situation and - as soon as I had committed to attending - worked us out a series of grants to help make up for the gap between the expected family contribution and the realistic one. I was impressed.

Walking Alone

I have never felt uncomfortable walking alone at any hour, and I have walked all over campus at some weird times. I often walk home from my friends' dorms across campus anytime between 1 and 6am, and my "scariest" moment was when a raccoon was guarding the doors into my building for a few seconds. So basically, it's not scary AT ALL. There is the random report every once in a while about assaults happening near the off-campus dorms, but everyone knows they're in a bad part of town, so it's common sense to walk with others.
