Academics at Whitman College

A+

Spectacular Academics!

Whitman first grabbed my interest when I heard about the passionate professors and small class sizes (and the academic quality at this school proved to be SO intriguing that I even left sunny Southern California to enroll!). After spending a year here, I think it is fair to say that ALL of my classes (even the dull subjects) were spectacular. The professors are all incredibly passionate, very accessible, and helpful. Most classes are discussion-based, which is a great way to connect with classmates. If you really put great effort into your coursework here (which sometimes means turning down a TKE party to put that extra ounce of enthusiasm into that art history paper), you will not be disappointed: you will have gained extensive knowledge and priceless writing skills applicable to all subject areas.

Diversity at Whitman College

D-

Whitman Is a Diverse as White Bread!

Most of everyone I knew at Whitman during my first year was white, from the Pacific Northwest, and upper middle class. Most students are very pretentious in nature (and they sure know it and show it!). Most Whitties are vegetarians/vegans, faithful to their Birkenstocks, and are hardcore outdoorsmen and boozers. If this doesn't describe you, it will be EXTREMELY difficult to form lasting friendships. I was immediately dismissed as a potential friend to most people here due to the fact that I am from Los Angeles and am not a green, democratic "treehugger." If you are different from the majority, you will stick out like a sore thumb and spend many dinners in the dining hall alone.
