Majoring in Fire Services Administration
Member since 8/8/2011
I'm a fire protection administration major the classes are relatively easy if you do the homework and study. I have a job in the field outside of the school so job opportunities are great.
I came to EKU because it has one of the best fire science programs, and I am so glad I did the professors are great, the workload isn't that bad, the curriculum for my major isn't that bad, registering is very easy you just have to logon to the schools website that is given to you when you get your school email to register for classes and I can balance school work with the rest of my commitments .
The computers at EKU are usually crowded, especially around crunch times, like midterms and finals. When I started at EKU I brought my own laptop and a printer so I wouldn't have to worry about finding a computer and I am glad I did.
The process for getting into the fire protection administration major is very easy you just have to submit the regular application and make sure you have declared the major on the application. If you are not sure about what major you want you can wait and declare your major later with no problems.
Weather changes alot here from day to day, except in the summer and winter. Spring and fall are hard to predict because it can rain, be really cold, or really hot you never know. It doesn't effect classes very often because most classes are near the dorms, in winter class may get cancelled due to the snow but it usually doesn't which sucks when some of your classes are across campus.
I am a fire protection administration/ emergency medical care program, and I love it, almost every class related to the major is very hands on and we get to experience what we will when we begin working in the field. Most of the professors have worked in the field or still work in the field so when it comes to getting a job the professors are a great help. The classes have an extensive work load but if you enjoy what you are learning it is not that bad. The majors also have there own activities outside of class that meet at least twice a month and the members get together and have fun and it is also a great place to get help on class work and a great way to find out about jobs or internships. EKU has state of the ark facilities for my majors and we get to experience what we will experience in the field while in class.
I have never felt unsafe on the Eastern Kentucky University campus. Campus police are a short distance away and if you need them all you have to do is call them if you need them. You recieve emails about situations that have been reported. I always keep my room and car locked to avoid theft or anything else that can occur.
I currently do not have an internship because I have a job through a fire department. I will say you have to be really good at managing your time if you are working or have an internship while going to school. Pay is not very high but I don't care I love my job and would not trade it for the world. Time commitment is very rigirous because you never know when your shift is going to end even though you have a set shift you never know when you are going to get a call.I am certified as a first responder and a firefighter. My responsiblities including cleaning apparatus, rolling hose, cleaning the department and stocking the ambulance.
