McGill University Campus Housing had a new discussion posted by emzbman

I'm transferring to McGill in the Fall as a sophomore student from U Iowa and I know absolutely no one in Montreal. From what I read 2nd year students rarely live on campus, any housing advice?

I applied to Mcgill as a US transfer, when will I hear back? I know it says feb-may but that's a large time window.

I don't know if transfer is different from regular, but I heard back sort of late, March or April I believe

Does UW have a good film production program (not film study, but actual production)? I'm currently at the University of Iowa and want to know how they compare.

Does Mcgill have a video production (cinema) program at all?

yes

the is a "world cinemas" minor which only includes film study, NOT film production.

I might be transferring from University of Iowa to UW-Madison, do you think they are really that different? If so, how?

Not that much different. I visited both schools and loved both of them. It seemed like the people at iowa cared more about you. Both are in college towns and big 10 schools so they are kinda alike

They are very different. I toured at the University of Iowa and it's a completely different atmosphere. Although Iowa is also a large school, UW-Madison has so many more diverse opportunities and the social life is much more prominent.

What are my chances of living in Ogg Hall as a sophomore transfer student?

Very good, I think; most sophomores will usually live there or Smith Hall.

Very high. I am a sophomore living there now and have a friend who did the very thing you are proposing.

I currently go to the University of Iowa, but am considering transferring to Mcgill. Does anyone have transfer student advice, both socially and academically?

Socially : Montreal is a huge city with many cultures. People speak french or english. People are nice :)

I know it's competitive. The one transfer I know had a 4.0 GPA from a US state university.

Macalester College had a new discussion posted by emzbman

I currently go to The University of Iowa, but am considering going to Macalester next year. Does anyone have any transfer advice either socially or academically?

I'm a sophomore, but most of my friends are juniors that transferred to Mac last year. I did notice that unfortunately, at the beginning of the year it seems like it's pretty easy for transfers to end up only socializing with other transfer students. However, by second semester, much like freshman, transfers' initial friend groups seemed to dissolve as people branched out. Honestly I'd just say it's important to be proactive about meeting new people and making new friends, so as not to stay in a 'transfer bubble.'

I currently go to the University of Iowa, but am considering transferring to Grinnell. Does anyone have transfer student advice, both socially and academically?

Transfer students seem to do very well becoming a part of the community. Socially, transfers tend to have a tight-knit group amongst each other, but do indeed make friends with the rest of the student body. Academically, Grinnell is extremely supportive in terms of advising and academic support. GC is great for xfers!

One of my best friends at Grinnell came in as a transfer student. He was a year above me, but took part in all of the new student orientation programs with my incoming class. The campus community is such that you're are always meeting new people in dorms and classes and activities, so it's not as if you've missed your chance to form good social connections. I'm not sure how the academic pressures will compare, but don't be afraid to reach out to the academic resources on campus, like academic advising and the writing lab. And Grinnell professors are generally super helpful and understanding, so talk to them. Good luck!

I'm transferring to UW next year, what is the experience like living in the regular dorms (not special transfer dorms) as a sophomore transfer student? Any housing advice for transfers?

live in sellery or witte. they're not as nice as other dorms, but most of them aren't very nice anyways. they are the most sociable ones. ogg and smith are nice and are in a good, lively area, but people tend to keep to themselves more. i'd avoid lakeshore; go for any southeast dorm.

Sellery and Witte are mostly freshman dorms. Great for the first year fun experience but a transfer student might find them a little immature and overwhelming. I would recommend Smith, Ogg, Merit House, or Liz Waters.
