From Healthcare Policy to International Health

I originally applied to NHS for international health, but changed my mind last minute to healthcare management and policy because i did not want to take Human Bio. Well, after a semester as HCMP I have learned that International health caters more to my interests. Healthcare in America was a very interesting class, but not exactly what I had in mind when I switched majors. HCMP is very business-e, domestic, and almost too political for my tastes (i was on the policy track). If you are into that, then great, but it's not quite my cup of tea. I'm looking forward to starting fresh with iHealth and exploring public health and all that it has to offer :D!

Athletics at Georgetown University

A

The Hoya Spirit

Hoyas have major school pride. The group known as Hoya Blue is essentially the full-time school spirit group on campus that makes it their mission to have a presence at every event. While football and a couple other sports may not be the best, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and more are great! Club and intramural sports are also so much fun to watch/join. Club can sometimes be harder to join but basically everybody can join or create an intramural team. Crew also offers everybody an opportunity to walk on to a division 1 team. Essentially, if you like a sport you can certainly find it here! :D!

Overall Experience at Georgetown University

A

Hoya for Life

Georgetown has been a home away from home for me. I was originally fearful of culture shock (latina from Texas moving to the east coast), but I absolutely love it here. The academics can be challenging but the support system here enables you to do your best. "Cura Personalis" or "Care for the whole person" is part of their jesuit philosophy and it's definitely true. I would definitely say to take a class for the professor and not necessarily the subject (my favorite class first semester was Problem of God with Professor Sanders, who would've though!). I can't imagine being anywhere else! There is definitely something for everyone at gtown!

Local Atmosphere at Georgetown University

A-

The Richest Neighborhood in DC

Georgetown is an extremely rich area. The least attractive townhouse may go for $1.5 million. Mst has some of the most expensive boutiques and shops in the city. There are politicians and former CEOs who live blocks away. Every president except Bush has eaten at the famous 1789 restaurant which is two blocks from the front gates. Because of its status, Georgetown is also extremely safe. The DPS updates the campus community about any offenses that occur in the area. I feel completely comfortable walking through the area (except maybe in the middle of the night but that's pretty much how it goes anywhere). Georgetown is really its own little world that is easy to get sucked into. Don't forget to venture out into the city. My favorite places are a bus ride away!!!

Computers at Georgetown University

B+

Not Too Sure...

I have a laptop (strongly recommend one. you can find great deals for students during the summer). The computers I have seen seem to be pretty up to date and nice. The only thing that annoys me is the lack of wireless all around campus especially in the dorms. We're suppose to get it by next year though...hopefully!

Greek Life at Georgetown University

N/A

What Greek Life?!?!?!

Georgetown does not recognize any official frats or sororities on campus. While there are a handful of chapters (APO,etc.) they don't run the campus like at many other universities. If you are looking for something similar to the community frats offer without all of the ridiculous hazing and lifelong commitments then a sports team or certain clubs will definitely suffice. The various townhouses off of Magis Row or Prospect would be the equivalent to a Greek house. You can always find a party on Prospect or Magis Row! I don't know any gtown student who dislikes the lack of frats, if anything they are pleased that they don't take over.

Campus Dining at Georgetown University

B-

Leo's, Leavey, and Epicurean

Creativity and resourcefulness is a must if one is going to deal with the food situation. Leo's is the only dining hall and while it is a nice atmosphere (2 floors with multiple stations) the food is sometimes less than satisfactory. Leavey has a few fast food places to eat at (Subway, Cosi, and Starbucks are normally the only one's ever open though). Epicurean is a restaurant on campus that has fairly good food but at obscene prices. In general, I recommend getting the smallest meal plan and just buying some groceries to make your own food or venture out into the city and try exotic food if you can afford it.

Guys & Girls at Georgetown University

A-

Maxim's Hot 100

So if Maxim rated the top prestigious schools in order of attractiveness Georgetown would certainly be at the top. Like any school with smart students there is definitely the nerdy looking girls and guys, but there are some surprisingly good looking people as well. Mostly white, but you can definitely find a little colorful flavor in the mix as well. It makes me wonder if that's part of the interview process as well (lol jk).

Inside Scoop at Georgetown University

A+

Ihealth, SFS, DC and More!!!

Georgetown is one of two schools in the US that has an international health major for undergrads. "The department's curriculum blends public health and health systems management with an emphasis on the environment, culture, economics, and politics and their influence on health."

Georgetown is also known for it's School of Foreign Service (Bill Clinton graduated from it). It's pretty self explanatory. It's a sweet school with so many opportunities available.

Georgetown also has the largest presence of interns on Capital Hill (yes even more than Harvard). The networking opportunities are limitless and even if you are not interested in politics many national organizations have their headquarters in DC. Plus there is no other city like DC and if you're going to go to school then Georgetown is the best choice.

While Georgetown may not have the title of an Ivy League (we have been offered multiple times but have declined because we would have to give up our Jesuit identity/philosophy and Big East status) we have the academics to compete with the top and sports teams that could easily beat out any Ivy League school.

Model UN is huge here!!!! We host the largest high school conference in the nation, bringing in students from all over the nation and world. Our traveling time also consistently wins awards at multiple Model UN conferences beating out other top ranking universities.

Georgetown is seriously just the place to be. If you don't believe me, then come visit and let us prove it to you!
