Health & Safety at Earlham College

A-

I Always Felt Very Safe..

The Earlham campus takes 2-3 minutes maximum pretty much to walk to anywhere, including most of the student housing. I never felt unsafe, though it's poorly lit at night. I never heard of any incidents, like muggings or stabbings like you might hear of from some city college. Earlham was/is very safe.

Campus Housing at Earlham College

The Dorms Are Were Just Your Average Dorms

The dorms are typical - small and prison-like, but you get used to them fast and can easily decorate them. They have freshman only housing, which I actually really like though a lot of my friends hated, saying they felt jipped, never meeting upperclassmen. The dorms are all close to each other and there's not that many options to pick from, considering how small the school itself is. The student houses are pretty cool though.

Transportation at Earlham College

D

Unless You Have a Bike or Car, There's Nothing!

Earlham's campus is super small, yes, but trying to get to any 'close' major city is a massive pain. There are no buses or trains to get you from Richmond to Dayton, Indianapolis, etc. It's extremely expensive to take a cab or have another student drive you (you need to pay for their gas). I found it very difficult to even get into the local town of Richmond without a car or bike! The Walmart is something like 4 miles from campus.

Academics at Earlham College

B

Lots of Cool Classes, Not Offered Very Often :/

Earlham has tons of amazing cool classes, like courses on bioethics, ghosts, creative writing on Harry Potter, weaving, museum studies, history of non-violent movements, etc but they aren't offered every semester (or even every year or two years). Also, only one time a semester are most classes offered (ie you can only take museum studies at 2:30 on Wednesdays).

Campus Strictness at Earlham College

C+

They Say It's a Dry Campus..

Earlham is called a dry campus on their website and other reviews but there is ample drinking here. If security sees you with alcohol, even if you're over 21, they make you pour it out. If you break something whilst drunk, obviously you have to pay for it. Wow, big deal. That's about it though.

Overall Experience at Earlham College

C-

I'm Still Not So Sure..

Earlham has a lot of exciting programs (study abroad, cool internships, etc) but even being such a tiny school with less than 1,200 students, they're super competitive and hard to get into, unfortunately. Also, the town around here is a real bummer, with very little to do. The movie theater is about the only point of interest. On campus though, there are usually neat student events, like dance classes or cooking contests. Most students never take advantage of them and they're poorly attended :( The parties at this school are often busted by security, also.

Diversity at Earlham College

A+

Highly Diverse!

I'm white and usually I'm the minority at the lunch table or in a classroom. There are probably at least 30% international students here, if not more, with many from Japan, Mexico, Australia, Norway, and China. I've met so many awesome people from around the world here; it's very neat and definitely something unique to Earlham.

Guys & Girls at Earlham College

C

Remember: It's a Small School.

With a student population of less than 1,200, burning bridges happens quickly here. Say you break a girl's heart -- well, suddenly the next day, half the school is mad at you.

As far as 'genres' of people, most folks here are hipster or nerds! Not very many punks, goths, girlie girls or preps here and certainly no jocks.

Inside Scoop at Earlham College

A

We Have a Museum on Campus!

Working at the natural history museum on campus here was life-changing and so amazing. I not only learned a lot but helped others, visiting the museum, learn, which I thought was very special. There are very few liberal arts colleges to have their own mummies, dinosaurs, and other cool artifacts right on campus -- connected to our science building, as a matter of fact!

Scholarships at Earlham College

B

I Got the Presidential Scholarship

Even the Pres. Scholarship is only $10,000 a year and for a school as expensive as Earlham, that doesn't really help that much, sadly. I didn't get any money from FAFSA either, so it's a pricey school to attend.
