Oxy Touts Its Diversity, but at Times It Seems Disingenous.
Though the campus is quite diverse for a private school, both ethnically and socioeconomically, it seems that Oxy values diversity chiefly as a selling point to prospective students. The "multicultural" dorm on campus is essentially "the hood," in the sense that it is in dire need of renovations. Apparently the school admits black students in numbers that fill their yearly quota.
More concerning is the shifting set of values held by the incoming class this year; there have been multiple instances of racial and heterosexist slurs being directed towards individual students. While it isn't perfect, it is still better than some southern state schools I guess...

Social Life Is Pretty Bad, but Academics Are Generally Good.
I came to Oxy hoping for an academic oasis, full of people who liked to have discussions deeper than expressing their dissapointment over Fourloko being banned, while still being capable of having a good time.
Oxy students aren't stupid, but my expectations are still unmet. The Residence Life staff and campus security are making big strides in toning down the drinking scene, seemingly in an effort to improve the college's academic reputation, but have really only succeeded in killing an already comparably weak social scene.
The parties are lame, most of the students think they are too good for Oxy, and the administration is a royal pain to deal with (bureaucracy is normal, but theirs is almost intolerable).

HUGE Hassle to Deal With Their Finaid Office, but It Is Generally Good
I had them lose my Financial Aid documents before I even started my first year at Oxy, then it happened again the next summer. Fortunately I was living in LA for the summer, and was able to go into their office to talk to them. In both instances FinAid told me I was missing documents I had sent in, so when I was there in person I asked them to check my folder rather than consulting the database, where they found all of the documents they said I was missing. Then the emailed again later in the summer saying I was missing MORE forms that I had turned in a couple weeks earlier, I went in again, and lo and behold the same thing happened.
It's a shame, because Oxy gave me a very good scholarship, but the entire process was absolutely terrible.
