Computers at New College of Florida

Technology on-Campus: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The wifi tends to be very hit or miss: My first year there were maybe two outages the entire year, but my second year, there were outages two or three times a week. I'd suggest getting an ethernet cable, especially if you live in Pei (which most freshmen do), since it's particularly weak there.

Printing on campus is very accessible. The library is open from 8am-1am, plus there's a student-regulated printing center that is open 24-hours, though it's often broken. Also, there are plenty of students who have personal printers who are happy to let you use them - we're a very friendly, community-centered campus.

The IT department is effectively useless. If you have any trouble with your personal computer, you're better off taking it to (a very reasonably priced) store about 5 minutes off campus.

Parking at New College of Florida

A+

Parking Is Incredibly Non-Stressful

Permits are easy to get, there is plenty of parking close to academic centers and the dorms, and there are no permit zones or 24-hour tow zones or anything - it's truly unparalleled.

Costly for Out-Of-Staters

I'm an out-of-state student and it's incredibly expensive to go here, but the Financial Aid office was pretty generous. If you're an in-stater, though, it's very inexpensive (I believe). The only problem is that a lot of students are eligible for work study positions, so they're pretty competitive, as they're lucrative: You can work up to 20 hours/week and, depending on the job, pays slightly more than minimum wage. Lots of them are desk jobs, too, so you can easily do homework while working. I had a job like that in the IT department and it was fantastic.

Haven for the Uncommon

Tips for admission: Do not be afraid to be yourself in your personal essay. Share what makes you different, even if other schools might consider you a bit odd, because New College cherishes the unique. Don't be afraid to talk about mental disorders or queer issues, or anything of the like, because we're a very nonjudgmental campus when it comes to those things.

Also, it was easy for me to get in - New College wants more out-of-state students, so it's easier to get in if you're not in-state.
