Off Campus Not Allowed
Furman Students are required to live on campus all four years, except with the exception of the very few fraternity members who choose to live in their Frat house (which only half of the frats have houses and they are not especially close to campus). Furman seems to be moving away from this however, and recently purchased The Vinings, which is a nice apartment complex, and is practically on campus. Seniors can enter the lottery to try and live there. The vinings is only slightly more expensive than on-campus apartments.

Not Typical Greek Life
Being in a sorority or fraternity at Furman doesn't necessarily decide your friend group. I am an independent who has friends in almost every fraternity and sorority. Some greeks complain about this because they feel like the aren't getting the "greek experience" but overall I think it is a good thing. Frats are not known for hazing here, but also many of them no longer have houses due to new Greenville housing codes that prevent "non-families" from living in many neighborhoods. Therefore, Frats usually host parties downtown by renting out local clubs and bars, which is not typical compared to other schools or to how it used to before the housing codes changed, but still very fun (probably even better, because we aren't worried about getting busted). Furman is not a party school by any means, but if you want to go out and have fun you can.

Most on Scholarship
Furman, being a private university is a very expensive place. Most students who get into furman qualify at least for the Achiever's scholarship (I think it is a 3.5gpa and 1250-1300 on the 2-part SAT-- but i could be wrong) which is around 10,000 a year. Many students are active in either sports or music, both of which are fairly well funded and offer scholarships to talented students. I am in the music department and I have had several friends successfully petition for more money after a successful freshman or sophomore year. Also, acceptance to the chamber choir or one of the honor chamber ensembles can get you additionally money. The point is, yes Furman is expensive, but if you apply for scholarships, and are willing to work, there is more money to be had. Also, there are many jobs on campus available to students and they are all very flexible and student-friendly.
