Off-Campus Housing at Santa Clara University

B

Convenient, Safe and Moderately Priced

For Silicon Valley, prices for off-campus housing are very reasonable. The majority of students choose to live off campus for their junior and senior years. When they move off campus, they will move either to the Domicilio Apartments or rent any of the houses on Bellomy, Lafayette or surrounding streets. There are so many options available within close proximity to campus and students say if they live more than three blocks away, nobody will visit them--they are not joking! Additionally, Santa Clara is a very safe area and I know of nobody who is concerned to live off campus. The biggest problem with off-campus housing would be parking in that it is very limited, especially for those who rent houses and have to share 1-2 parking spots with a whole house. The Santa Clara PD will cite like crazy so, if you do park on the street, be sure to never exceed the time limit! Overall, you will love living off-campus as it is inexpensive, convenient and safe.

Nightlife at Santa Clara University

A-

Work Hard, Play Hard.

Coming to Santa Clara, I had no idea it would be such a party school. Given the small town location and lack of bars and other nightlife around, students tend to party a lot in the off-campus apartments and houses. There is always an event going on every night of the week so if you are looking for something to do, I guarantee you will find it! The Greek houses, although unaffiliated with the school, throw lots of fun, themed parties which are open to everyone. Day parties are huge here, given the nice weather, and I have enjoyed them much more than the typical house parties. As far as the bar/club scene, there are a few bars nearby that students frequent and are easy to get in to with a fake ID. However, the prices for the drinks are extravagant as the owners know the students have no other option. Transportation to the bars and other nightlife in the area is not a huge concern as everything is within walking distance. Santa Clara is definitely not in a city with an active nightlife, but the students know how to have fun and there are always great parties.

Inside Scoop at Santa Clara University

B+

Best of Both Worlds

Santa Clara is unique in that it offers a small, tight-knight community in which you will see familiar faces every day, but also are able to make new friends constantly. The social life rivals that of a large university. This is great because it is the perfect combination for students looking for attention and small class sizes in their academic programs, but who also want an active social life with plenty of networking opportunities. The facilities are top notch and are all eco-friendly. Many students joke that the campus looks like a country club and, with the amazing landscaping, palm trees and pristine buildings, they are not far off. Additionally, Santa Clara's location is perfect. While in a small town, San Jose, San Francisco and Santa Cruz are all extremely close by and provide plenty of opportunities for fun off-campus. Overall, it is a great place to go to school and would be a great fit for students who love to work hard and play hard.

Health & Safety at Santa Clara University

A+

Medical Amnesty Is Great!

I have never felt unsafe on campus and doubt I would even if I were to walk home alone late at night. The Campus Safety department is extremely active on campus and is always willing to help. Students are generally concerned with one another's safety and, as a result of the recent implementation of Medical Amnesty, students can seek medical help for a friend or fellow student without risking disciplinary consequences. Crime is extremely limited and the most extreme it gets is people stealing food from the refrigerators in the dorm kitchens. Needless to say, crime is very tame here, campus safety takes their job seriously and students always feel safe.

Greek Life at Santa Clara University

B-

Present, but Unaffiliated.

The university no longer affiliates or funds the Greek chapters. However, Greek life is still very much present in campus social life. There are four social sororities and four social fraternities, as well as multi-cultural and business fraternities. It is not difficult to make friends if you are not involved, but, as a guy, it definitely helps with your social life as you are able to get into more parties. Girls can get into any party, so it is not as much of an issue. Greek life here is mainly just for a better social life and while they do positive things for the community, service and scholarship is definitely not as much of a priority as it may be at other schools. I would estimate that around a third of the school is involved in Greek life, so it by no means dominates the social scene, but it is nice to be a part of.
