Campus Dining at University of Virginia

There's a Reason Why Nobody Comes to UVA for the Food...

In short, the food is expensive, mediocre at best and very redundant. There are 3 dining halls to chose from for the non student-athelets and they basically serve the same food, although some can be better or worse depending on the day. The food is all-you-can-eat at every dining hall at every meal, and this usually comes in handy because it takes about 2 to 3 different dishes before you can find something that's worth eating. Overall, the food is bland or always prepared horribly wrong but everyone usually finds a weekly dish that they like or falls back on the daily cereal/salad bar. It's also very expensive -- each plan costs about $10 a meal, which is totally not worth it. Clearly the University spends its resources elsewhere, but at least there's a Starbucks on "grounds" where you can use your PLUS dollars!

Campus Strictness at University of Virginia

A

Very Reasonable

The police (both Charlottesville and UVA) are there to make sure you don't do anything stupid when you're drunk, not to reign in the drunken masses. Drinking underage is very very common and easy to get away with. The administration and RAs, for the most part, are there to educate students on proper, safe drinking habits or how deal with an intoxicated friend. There are no visitation hours in dorms but this doesn't create an unsafe feeling around "grounds" -- everyone is very trusting of each other. As long as you don't do anything outwardly stupid when engaging in "college" activities, you won't really get caught.

Inside Scoop at University of Virginia

You Have to Make an Honest Effort...

To get the most out of UVA, you have to make an honest effort (even more so than other schools). Because most of the 14,000 students are motivated and at least moderately smart, there are high levels of competition for clubs, teams, positions, majors and almost everything. So make sure you take tryouts or application processes seriously. This level of intense competition is especially true for the Commerce School as most of my friends who are "pre-Comm" complain classmates that won't help them with homework or projects. Also there's a lot of ethnic/racial/socio-economic self-segregation so if you want to have a diverse group of friends it may take some conscious effort on your part. But once you find your niche, UVA's competitive/self-segregating atmosphere can be rewarding.
