Academics at SUNY University at Albany

B

Excellent Programs in the Humanities, Math and Sciences. Well-Known for Business School.

The school offers excellent programs within certain departments. The Mathematics and Physics Departments feature advanced courses that will prepare students for graduate study. The school also features many exceptional professors, although some who excel within their professional fields are not neccessarily the most talented or enthusiastic educators. Additionally, large lecture classes and poor coordination between primary and complementary classes can make it difficult to develop a cohesive curriculum of study. In addition, recent budget cuts have caused the school to cut certain majors in the Arts, while the costs of their atheletic programs (football) and operating costs (construction) remain high.

The school is well-known for football and other athletics, so the college has a lot of jocks in attendance. There are also a lot of highly-motivated scholars and intellectuals enrolled there, many pursuing pre-med. degrees and majors related to nanotech (The campus features a new Nanotech. building). Lots of students go out to local bars during the week and on weekends, and there are numerous fraternities, religious organizations and clubs where students socialize.

Parking at SUNY University at Albany

C

Massive Parking Lots

Parking lots on campus are close to buildings and very large, in order to accomodate the large amount of students. This creates more walking distance for non-driving students. There is reliable and fairly efficient public transportation available (does get quite crowded at certain times), and university busses also run on campus. The parking lots seem to be mostly vacant for almost the entire year, except on registration/ orientation days, and the expansive fields of asphalt aren't helping with the global warming crisis. Nor do they complement the green agenda the university has advertised.

Off-Campus Housing at SUNY University at Albany

C

Nice Houses, Rough Area and Rowdy Neighbors

Houses for rent range from nice to trashy (literally). Some college kids just don't take care of their rentals, and frat houses have rowdy parties at odd hours. Sometimes they get out of hand and police are called. Some areas in Albany are quite nice, and the spaces themselves are generally affordable. However, many nice-looking rentals are close to poorer areas, which increases risk of muggings and attacks. If you're not out alone late at night, you should be fine.
