Campus Housing at University of California - Irvine

B

Housing

On campus housing for freshmen differs greatly. Mesa court provides more of a homey feel (at least for those living in phase 1 buildings), while Middle Earth seems to be more on par with apartment buildings. Off campus housing for second years is ok, but can get very expensive for VDC/Norte.

There is almost no enforcement of the drug/alcohol policy after your first year, as the apartment style rooms provide a secluded area that is not often patrolled.

Guys & Girls at University of California - Irvine

C

Relationships...

First year, just about everyone who is good-looking is taken. Seeing as how this is a HUGE COMMUTER school, most people have boyfriends or girlfriends waiting for them back home. That changes by the end of first year for the most part, at which point it's hard to get to know people any way other than through classes. And the school is visually like 80% Asian.

Where Are All the Creative People...?

UC Irvine is known for its Pre-Med program, as about 50% of incoming freshmen are declared as Biology majors. I find, as an English major, that there are very few creative minds around campus. The best you can hope for in terms of writing is the "New University" newspaper, which avoids controversial issues at best. There is a Literary Mag that is published quarterly, but no creative writing club or outlet for aspiring writers (who aren't journalists).
