This Is Where the Money Goes
NYU is a very aesthetically modernized university. Bobst library for example is a sight on its own, I was actually kinda overwhelmed to go there my first time. The Stern building is in general the epitome of that clean, swanky yet minimalist style. Not every single building is necessarily fantastic because truth be told just like any other student I haven't had a reason to go to all of em, but the main buildings right on the square-Silver, Kimmel, Bobst, etc-are very nice aesthetically. The one downside however is that you ARE in an overcrowded vertical university--get ready for elevator lines, even lines up and down the stairs, and just generally alotta crowds and congestion. If you get claustrophobic it's something to consider..

A Mess
There are a LOT of hipsters and a great number of spoiled yuppy types (especially in Stern), so the typical 'looks' follow those types. Alotta the people here are into alotta things since you are in nyc, many are into the party scene, others theater, others music, other just random exploring. The social life can be tricky if you aren't into the club scene or don't have the money for it, but you CAN find things to do obviously. For straight girls, the dating scene is notoriously nightmarish because there are so many more girls than guys, and alotta the guys are gay, but then again you have the upside of not being sequestered on campus. Straight guys have it pretty easy by the same rule. The LGBTQ population has a large presence, NYU and NYC in general is an accepting place. It's an easy place to be open about your sexuality on and off campus.

As a Non-Greek
The greek system is really only a big deal to the people in it. It doesn't dominate socially whatsoever, and because of the location of NYU, the frats just don't have the 'frat houses' to host the huge crazy parties you expect from greeks. My roommate freshman year went greek and loved it, on the other hand that made my first interaction with the greek system the incident where the sororities decorate their pledges' rooms (I was kind pissed about 1. the fact that I lived their too didn't seem to be considered and 2. the principle of some stranger messing around in my room while I was out)
