Cheap Living in an Expensive City
"New York City is the place where dreams are made of." We have all heard that before, students come to the city with high expectations and dreams, but how can they meet these high goals on a realistic budget? NYU is smack dab in the middle of Manhattan, one of the most expensive places to live in the entire country. As a student here I was at first worried about the high cost of living, but now that I live here I have been able to find cheap eats and shopping that fit easily into my budget. There are so many markets , small restaurants, street fairs, and thrift stores in walking distance from campus that have reasonable prices. Most people in the area are friendly, and they will point out to you the good places to shop, and the places to avoid.

NYU Living
Freshman dorms are your typical style dorm room with two or three beds and a shared bathroom. Low cost housing is available, and for the most part that is cheaper than living on your own in an apartment in the city. Upperclassmen dorms get a little pricey, but they all include a kitchen. You have to remember that living in Manhattan is expenesive to begin with, most dorms end up being cheaper than renting an apartment and paying for utilities. By senior year most people are out of dorms and living in either Brooklyn or Queens where the cost of living is overall less expensive.

Off Campus Living
There is always an apartment or condo available in the city, but price is always an issue. If you decide to live out of Manhattan the cost of living declines drastically, but then you have to worry about a heavy commute everyday for classes.

Apply for Outside Aide
NYU is notorious for giving out very little aide. I got a few scholarships but they barely covered room and board. My parents income isn't that high, especially since my dad was unemployed, but I still didn't receive much from the school. I had to turn to sources outside of the school for financial aide.
