Union College or Santa Clara University?

The two are very different. It depends on what you're looking for in a school. I picked Union over a larger university because it was smalled and I wanted something more personal. That said, the schools I was deciding between were both in New York. California is much different than upstate New York and that could make a big impact on your decision.

Which dorm would you recommend for a freshman?

It depends on what atmosphere you are looking for.

Webster is the substance-free, focused-study dorm, though it still is very lively with a lot of interesting people.

Davidson, the only dorm with suites, is known for its partying and noise. It's known as the social-dorm, though it could be argued that it is the most social dorm.

West is made up of doubles and some singles. Everyone is super friendly, some people party, some dont. It is the most central dorm, with the freshman dining hall being on the first floor.

Richmond is similar to West, as it is known neither for big partying or focused-study. Richmond and West also have a fair amount of partying, but apparently are not as loud as Davidson.

It really depends on what you want out of living. I lived in West my freshman year and I thought it was perfect. Everyone's doors were open to hang out at any time, there was always someone going out and always people staying in, plus there was easy access food all the time.

Davidson is very social and it is nice to have suite mates in your freshman year just so that you meet more people and aren't stuck with only your roommate in the beginning of the year. Also, the common room is great. That said, in the winter you will wish you lived in West so you didn't have to go outside to get to the dining hall.

Is the curriculum flexible? I would love to attend Santa Clara but I want to study neuroscience.

Psychobiology is avialable. I am in a similar position

Would psychobiology be similar enough to neuroscience to consider it as an equivalent major? If not, I was thinking of possibly double majoring in psychology and biology or designing my own major. Does anyone have any input or advice on this?

When should I expect my financial aid package?

I just got mine today. I was informed by e-mail. I went to OSU Nights this week, and they told me to expect the physical award letters in the mail next week.

In Spring of the year before you want the financial aid for.

During Spring Term. You should first receive an email, and through your ONID account you have to choose to accept or deny whichever options you want. Then a week or so after you should receive a physical award letter from financial aid.

You can check what you will receive in the mail through student online services now

Can someone describe each of the RLCs/Halls? Which one would be best for a freshman?

Could someone clarify how the RLCs function and which halls you would recommend for a student who wants to be able to balance studying and socializing?

RLCs are paired with dorms so everyone in each dorm is in the same RLC. RLCs have socials and events throughout the year and you take a couple classes with only people from your RLC. Each RLC has a theme but most people don't care much about the theme and pick their RLC mainly based on the dorm they want.
Swig is the closet we have to a freshman Dorm, its loud noisy, people like to party, but most people really love it.The rooms and accommodations are ehhh. Located near Benson (food) but not particularly near anything else . New Graham is the new building, its absolutely gorgeous. The rooms are huge, private bathrooms, beautiful courtyard. New carpeting. its also fairly quite. Mostly sophomores this year but who knows next year. The RLC events they do in Graham are the best in my opinion (but I'm biased, I live there). The CF's are awesome, but this year (it's first year), it is definitely on the less social side. It does have an optimal location located within a hundred feet of the Library and Benson (food), and about a minute away from the gym. Dunne is a calmer, less freshman version of Swig. Very social, fairly party oriented. The rooms are a little crappy, no carpeting, but all the people I know who live there love their floor. Not located particularly near anything (although SCU campus is fairly small so it's not that fair from anything either. Look at the map if you are confused). Walsh and Maglauflin are the two s*tiest dorms on campus (they are two buildings but one RLC and pretty much exactly alike). Although, even they are pretty on par or above most college dorms. No carpeting, and gendered bathrooms are every other floor, e.i. woman's bathrooms on first and third, men's on second. People seem to have a good enough time there. It doesn't have much of a reputation for anything, other than being the cheapest option. San Filipo and Campisi, are two dorms I don't know much about. They are right next to the gym and close to the library. The one time I was inside one of them, the rooms seemed pretty decent. It seemed like a nice balance of freshman and sophomores, not too party oriented, not too quite. But like I said, I don't have any friends that live in them and they don't have much of a reputation for anything, other than having an unusual number of athletes, especially swimmers and water polo players, probably due to the near vicinity of the gym. Sobrato is not near anything in particular. Its suite style, so the floors tend to be a lot less social. I also was not a big fan of the Resident Director when I met her. I would recommend Sobrato for sophmores with a steady friend group more so than for freshman. Freshman do live there and have a good time, but I hear alot of complaints. Casa Italiana is really nice but it's really out of the way. Its is not close to any of the other dorms on campus, its not close to food or classes. It is near the Student Center Locatelli but that's about it. It is also suite style so the same thing as Sobrato, but most of the people I know have enjoyed living in Casa, I hear they have good events. But again, suite style does tend to mean less friendly hallways, although usually suitemates build up solid friendships.

Thank you for such a great and detailed response! So overall, for Freshman, you would mostly recommend Swig, San Filipo or Campisi just because they are more social and have decent rooms to start of building good friendships?

Swig is great for being social but some people complain that it can be noisy when they are trying to sleep or study. The rooms are also smaller than those in other dorms. San Filipo and Campisi are better if you want somewhere more balanced.

My financial aid package was very small and I definitely won't be able to afford to go here. Is there any way I can appeal for more aid?

you can call them and ask about how to appeal. there should be some sort of form online for it either way. my friend said that they're very flexible and often give more aid when you appeal! good luck

Tell them you want a review of your financial aid package and explain how much you want to attend.

What's the maximum amount of scholarship someone can receive here? I just got my financial aid package at it doesn't even cover half the cost of attendance.

I applied to Drexel without a co-op program and was recently accepted. Is it too late to add a co-op program if I decide to attend this school?

yes

I currently attend Drexel and have switched from the 4 year, one coop program to the 5 year, 3 coop program.

So I am pretty sure you just have to talk to your advisor and change your current program.

they will let you add/switch your co-op plan as best they can. so no, it is not too late
