South Carolina's Cultural Epicenter Near Campus
When you think of the south and particularly the Carolinas, not much is known about the cultural diversity and variety of recreation they offer. I live in a small area of Columbia, SC reserved for families and plain nature, secluded from metropolitan attractions and shopping. As a city dweller growing up, this is a culture shock of its own -- but then there's the University of South Carolina's campus. Downtown areas are known for having myriad industries and city parks located within them, but USC's playground extends all of downtown Columbia, SC. We currently have a free Shakespeare festival occurring through our university streets and are home to 32 theaters, ranging from student workshops to prestigious state art houses. The McMaster Gallery exhibits the best of art along with historical trails to show the historical monuments and locations of South Carolina's history to crowds amidst campus life. There are modern shops, restaurants, a massive public library modernized for a 21st century reader, and roughly 4 university libraries that offer an array of research and comfort to students and educators alike. We have the Coliseum, a gargantuan, postmodern building in which major cultural shows, fairs, and festivals take place. We have marathon walks, recreational sports, a famous Gamecock football stadium, and an overall active, thriving, progressive community which offers such a breadth of attractions and events, sports to music, entertainment to political affairs, that I have a little bit of my city nostalgia sated every time I head into campus. The local atmosphere instills a local attitude between us students of acceptance, tolerance, and interest in artistic endeavors as well as a frenzy of an outdoor social life. While security is somewhat lax because everyone has a lackadaisical, kind attitude around these parts, I do believe the local atmosphere is exciting and refreshingly up-to-date for a city with such rich historical context to it.
