You're going to find people like that no matter where you are in the southern United States. The stories you've heard were from people that probably weren't in Austin. Those types of people are an incredibly small minority in Austin, especially near the University of Texas campus. The majority of Austin is the exact opposite of that stereotype.

There's actually a lot of Asian Americans who attend; the culture is quite modern.

You will find people like that anywhere in the US. I live in Seattle,WA and I even sometimes see the confederate flag flown here. I was talking to a teacher who used to teach in Austin and she said Austin was one of the most liberal parts of Texas. The "hicks" won't be the majority. If you want to stay away from them there should be no problem doing so.

No, this is not true at all. I live in central AR. Everyone does not sport the confederate flag and for those who do, they have a different meaning behind them sporting it. I don't know many people who have the "hick" mentality. You'll run across some accents though. I have a friend (She lives elsehwere in AR) who's going to UT Austin this year and she apparently has a really Southern accent, according to some people she has met at the orientation!

Diversity is a double edged sword. People want to be accepted, but I sure don't want any hicks around..seems two faced to me. make the world smaller, love a hick, you might be surprised what happens
