Academics at URI
The university has excellent advisors and clear, well thought out, and easy to follow plans of action to follow to successfully complete your degree in 4 years. The professors are all top notch and in the journalism major the professors and advisors are very important figures in the industry and know what it takes to be successful. The workload can be stressful at times, but simply by getting to know your professors you can be very successful at URI.

Diversity at URI
Throughout the years, URI has developed a very diverse and accepting population from all walks of life. With major movements throughtout the 90's and even earlier, the university has gained a very diverse curriculum and also student body. When walking to class, you see all different races and ethnicities and never once think to label the school as "mostly white" or anything like that. Also, many of my friends have very diverse economic, political, and religious situations. As for sexual orientation, there are many openly gay and bi-sexual students and they are embraced by the university and the student body with well respected clubs, organizations, and even housing.

Athletics at URI
At URI, programs like the basketball program used to be the biggest in the state, but recently the team, along with many other athletic teams, have become the laughing stock of their conferences. Students do get involved however, including the student section called "The Mob." The facilities like the Ryan Center are top notch, but the teams simply are not. Unfortunately, if friends and I attend a game, it is usually because there's nothing else to do, as opposed to going to see the team play. Most often, they lose.

URI Can Be Dangerous
There very often seems to be fights and brawls in the streets. Usually they don't affect anyone innocent unless you're dumb enough to walk into one. There is a small amount of crime like theft or vandalism, and is no danger to anyone. I have hear stories about armed robberies, so that certainly will drop the grade. More often than not though, as long as you don't fall into the wrong group of people, you will never see or be involved in this type of activity.

URI Dorms Tend to Suck
There are a few decent updated dorms, and one major dorm being built, but for the most part the dorms are old and not even close to updated. There are about three nice dorms for Freshman and the same amount for upperclassmen. The rest are awful. Never have you seen so many cockroaches in your life. Some of them have kitchens and what-not, but no one uses them. Laundry machines are usually on each floor and theres never usually a problem finding open machines or time to do it. The hallway style dorms are very nice in the idea that you get to meet everyone and can easily talk and interact with people. That certainly is a plus, but with the amount that you have to pay to live there, you would expect the dorms to be nicer.
