Computers at Elon University

A+

Computer Atmosphere

The campus is full of computers, macs and pcs. You're not required to bring a laptop but you are welcome to do so. We have numerous labs on campus that contain macs and pcs. For communications students it is easier to have a mac because the communications building is full of macs. So it's easier to transfer your work. However, there are communications students with pcs, so whatever you prefer is fine. You'll never have a hard time finding a computer on campus, not even during exams. Most of the labs are open to all students for 24 hours.

It's not necessary to bring a printer. Though, again, you are welcome to do so. All students are given print dollars. Usually students don't run out. For our printers, the first three pages (front and back) are free. However, most students just print three pages at a time.

The campus is setting up a program where students can print wireless straight from their laptop to any printer on campus; which is perfect if you're in a rush.

The entire campus is wireless. You could sit in the middle of a parking lot and access the internet. It is quick and reliable.

Campus Dining at Elon University

A-

Dining Options

We have three main dining halls on campus, and overall twenty-two options for dining.

There're sub shops, salad bars, buffets, fine dining (salmon, crab-cakes, steak, etc), pizza bars, grilles, chick-fil-a, smoothie bar, sports bar, breakfast/brunch options, fresh-made sushi.

We're adding a global themed dining hall. It will have Morrocan food, traditional hispanic food, etc.

The food is delicious. As a vegetarian, I find no difficulty in finding food on campus.

There're also about 40 off campus venues that will take our meal swipes, phoenix cash, or meal dollars (given to students for free with a purchase of a meal plan).

After freshman or sophomore year (if you have a kitchen) it's best to get a "Block Plan" if you plan to utilize your kitchen.

The dining halls stay open until 9. There're three places (one of the sub bars/coffee shops, sports bar, pizza bar) on campus that stay open until 1AM.

Scholarships at Elon University

B+

Financial Aid

All of my tuition was covered through financial aid. I did early decision. If you do early decision, you don't find out about financial aid until after the fact. However, if financial aid is a deal breaker for you, then you may want to apply Early Action or Regular Decision. Most students receive a pretty good amount of financial aid. More so if they are need-based.

Off-Campus Housing at Elon University

B

Off Campus Housing

Off Campus Housing is in abundance and not too far from campus. Some of it is closer than on campus housing. The prices are really good. The campus shuttle will come to most off campus apartments (which tend to be about 10 minutes away). The costs range from $300-$500. Student Housing is also a viable option and for that it can be as low as $150 a month. I've never heard about parking bein an issue. The school provides a list of housing off campus to help you find a place.

The cons are, you have to purchase your own internet and cable (in some places), and the quality may not be as nice as campus quality.

Athletics at Elon University

B+

Campus Athletic Atmosphere

Athletics doesn't dominate the social atmosphere. We are not a "sports school." However, we do very well in baseball, golf, and soccer. We're not too shabby in tennis. The women's basketball team is pretty good. The football team does pretty well for Division I AA. We're Division I for our sports. We have school spirit, but mainly during huge family weekends and homecoming. If you travel to an away game, you're not going to see that many phoenix fans.

The athletic facilities are great. They have their own state of the art facilities. It contains saunas, jacuzzis, weight rooms, and the basics.

Campus Strictness at Elon University

A-

Campus Strictness

The number one concern is campus safety. Safety is not a campus issue. If you participate in criminal activities you may be written up. If you harm someone else in the process, it may result in a suspension or expulsion.

All of our Resident Assistants (who are students) have "rounds" that they do on the weekends. Basically they go from building to building making sure everything's okay. If you're being loud and obnoxious they may knock on your door. If you're caught drinking and you're underage, they have to write you up.

Example situation:

You open the door and an RA is standing there. There are five of you in the apartment. One person in the apartment is over 21, and there're two beer cans on the counter. You tell the RA you haven't been drinking.

Result: The RA will assume you are telling the truth and the 21 year old drank the beer

Example Situation 2:

You open the door and the RA sees a ton of empty alcohol bottles and beer cans all over the place.

Result: Obviously the 21 year old didn't drink it by their self...so everyone gets written up

Example Situation 3: You try to run

Result: Campus Security will probably catch...the RA obviously knows your room number and will have no difficulty figuring out your name...AND you will be written up and receive a harsher punishment.

Example Situation 4: You're OBVIOUSLY drunk

Result: They have to write you up.

The punishments start out with warnings, fines, and possible one page reflection papers. As you are written up more, you may have to pay larger fines, complete restitution hours (community service), or take an online class about alcohol safety.

Since RAs are students...they have lives they'd rather get back to. They don't WANT to write you up. Basically don't be loud and obnoxious. Especially if your building has paper thin walls (which is only in the on-campus apartments). If they don't hear anything...they won't knock on your door. They have set hours for rounds so you know when they're gonna come through. Hide your alcohol...don't leave it in plain sight. AND don't let the drunkest person open the door!

Basically. BE SMART about it
