are we able to request our dorms freshman year or is it random

it's random. you can request a roommate though if you happen to meet someone at orientation you like or know someone beforehand that's going. otherwise that's random too..and really random at that. there's not really much of a questionnaire

It is random unless you choose "special interest housing" but even then, its random and don't count on the questionnaire to help you with a roommate with similar living style!

does anyone have any experience getting into the honors college after your freshman year(or first semester. i forget how it works)?

You apply and transfer in. You'll get an email about transferring to H-Col at the end of your Freshman first semester.

you will begin to get emails after your first semester if you have good grades encouraging you to apply for your sophomore year. there are a few dates that you can go to an informational meeting and learn about the honors college, then applications are due sometime in spring

it's definitely worth applying for, the dorms, classes and people are great.

Okay so I got news yesterday that I was deferred. I know I'll hear back by May 1, but when would I typically hear back

Also, I have a 3.58 and a 2000 SAT. Pretty good essays and letters of recommendation so I know i'm not far from their average (if that's relevant at all). And I'm out of state

You should hear back sometime in March. I have had many friends on the waiting list, and they heard back no later than the middle of March. Good luck!

If i received the presidential scholarship, how likely is the honors college?

Pretty likely but it's not guaranteed. Although the honors college dorms are absolutely the best, and super nice!

Anyone have any insight into the environmental science program? especially compared to larger research universities

There is a college here devoted to environmental science.

I was an environmental science major freshman year 1st semester. I switched out because it wasn't for me, but I still saw the potential in such a short time. UVM ENSC as a major can be done in three different colleges: arts and science has the major available which is more of a broad base; CALS (the one I was in) has a dedicated department to it seemed pretty promising; reubenstein has it as well, and is a college which focuses directly on all things environmental science. I've heard many good things about it, and they have a brand new building this year which is a green building where they conduct experiments on some new technologies. UVM ENSC also has a strong base for off-campus research opportunities with local farms and businesses.

Sounds good. I'm accepted into rubbenstein. what did you end up switching to

only considering freshman year, is it necessary to be in a frat if you want the party scene?

No. It can help but you can find parties otherwise. I personally don't like most of the party frats (beta) because I think its just paying to live in a dirty dorm to make friends.

Absolutely not.

okay that's good to hear. how big is the disparity in social life between lakeshore and southeast dorms

It's pretty big. Lakeshore is definitely more low-key and geared toward academics whereas Southeast is definitely geared more towards chaos and partying. I lived in Lakeshore both my freshman and sophomore years and wouldn't have changed my experience for the world. And this is not to say that social life is lacking in Lakeshore either! Plus, there's no way that Southeast wins a snow ball fight on Bascom Hill versus Lakeshore. ;)

Does anyone have any insight on the natural science program? also scholarships in CALS?

The natural science program is great at UW. The courses are challenging but the professors are awesome.
