I feel extremely safe walking around campus alone, even at night. You are much more likely to be offered marijuana than be a victim of a serious crime. Bike theft is rampant, however. The actual city is a little more sketch, however, so I would not go into town alone if I could help it.

Drugs
Santa Cruz is pretty infamous for its drug culture. Marijuana is pretty popular among the student body and very easy to obtain. You can choose to hang out with people that don't smoke and I have never felt forced to try anything I didn't want to. Alcohol is slightly less popular, but still prevalent among the party kids. That being said, ever since going here, I have been shocked at the number of my friends that have taken drugs before that I thought were straight.

UCSC Financial Aid
The financial aid here is quite helpful, especially if you give them everything that they need on time (FAFSA/any documents needed). I have had had experiences with them simply because I didn't do my job and was late on things. However, they still offered me advice and helped me through the process and for that, they get a good grade. Always helpful when you need. B plus for occasional lines and spotty hours.

Something for Everyone
Santa Cruz is great. There's a little bit for most everyone- concerts, shopping, protest rallies. Plenty of places to shop and hang out in town. There's usually a good mix of locals and students Downtown. Grade takes a hit from locals' infamously low opinion of students. However, I've yet to meet an excessively rude local; indeed many are former students themselves.

One Word: Impacted
Psychology is very popular at UCSC, so classes will fill up. Many requisite classes throw you in with 200 of your closest friends, so don't get discouraged just because you didn't get into a class right away. My advice would be to get comfortable crashing classes early. This can give you a leg up over the more timid frosh. Once you've taken the necessary classes, applying is easy enough. Just meet with the department advisor Gail to mock up a general plan and you're good to go.
