Diversity at Temple University

Diversity of Temple University

Temple University's main campus is extremely diverse. There are students and faculty of every race, religion and background. As far as I know, the school is very sensitive to these differences, and I do not believe there is much of a challenge in regards to diversity. However, there does seem to be less economic diversity. Most of the people I've met on campus come from middle class or low income families, though I have met one or two students with a more privileged background. I do not know about diversity of sexual orientation on campus, whether there is much diversity in that regard I cannot say.

Practical Buildings

Temple's main campus is designed in a fairly straight forward manner with a practical mind set. Though some of the architecture is quite pleasing to the eye, most of it is designed for functionality. There are many trees around campus and decorative flowers that also bring the campus to life somewhat. The only issue is that some of the buildings are rather old, and the heating and cooling systems not always entirely reliable. Even then, it is to a minor degree, and still quite usable. This is evidence to me that money is spent in the interest of education, rather than aesthetics, which is how I feel it should be.

Environmental Action

Temple university advertises itself as a school that supports eco-friendly practices, they even ask students to take a "sustainability pledge" and have a "sustainability week." However, the school participates in an unfortunate relationship with an company that finances an environmentally destructive practice that negatively impacts the health and economy of communities in parts of the country. Some members of the student body have are protesting this relationship and asking Temple to consider the student and faculty's voices, and our right to pay for a school that supports causes we support. Temple itself seems to be generally supportive of sustainability, and it's students are dedicated enough to challenge the school they love to stand by their statements.
