Health & Safety at St. John's University

A-

Campus Safety to the Rescue

I feel safe when I see patrol cars everywhere and officers sitting at most of the school entrances. It's also great that they close campus late at night and you have to sign in with your school id. Also, they keep us informed about the problems off campus. People aren't fans of the "dry campus" rules, but I don't mind--we're in the city. Drink elsewhere.

Athletics at St. John's University

A

Red Storm Basketball

St. John's sports are pretty important to the university and the student body. It's really fun to go to games and see people get dressed up and freak out over basketball. Also, we get really great prices for student tickets, and its awesome to sit on the floor for a Duke vs. St. John's game. We play a lot of big name teams, so if you're into basketball in general, its great. We're division 1 in many, many other sports too. Our men's soccer team is killing it.

Campus Strictness at St. John's University

B

Ready for AA Meetings?

I've seen plenty of people drink or smoke in the dorms and not get caught, but I've also seen the harsh punishments that they face when they do get caught. I'm not a drinker or smoker so I don't care about that stuff, but it's definitely a gamble so you have to ask yourself: if I drink in my dorm, am I prepared to attend mandatory alcohol abuse seminars all semester? I don't think so. Plus, Manhattan is bus ride away--go there and drink all you want!

English Program Exceeds Expectations

All my professors are experts in their field. They are incredibly dedicated to their work and to my education. People may say some harsh things about academics at St. John's, but you really get out what you put in and those people don't put in anything. I've seen the people who don't try and don't take good classes and complain about the school. If you're smart and dedicated, then you will find a lot of things to love about the English program, the professors and the atmosphere. They're all really nice too! And, because other people are dedicated and smart, you'll find that there's healthy competition.

Scholarships at St. John's University

A+

Thanks, St. John's!

St. John's gave me all the aid and more, with little to no hassle. It's all from academic merit though, so I can't speak about need-based financial aid. If you're smart, do well on standardized tests and have a good record and application, then an academic scholarship is probably not out of the picture. St. John's really does reward students who make the effort.
