Health and Safety
I have never felt unsafe at American University. Security is constantly roaming throughout the campus. As far as health goes, I've been to the health center a couple of times and never had any problems.

Off-Campus
There are many options of Off-Campus Housing at American University. Although some of the places are expensive, the prices of rent can be significantly lowered if you share an apartment with 2 or 3 roommates.
