Getting English Papers Done
As an English major the largest portion of my workload consists of written papers, critiques and reading which, to be honest, is a pretty large amount of work to have to do every week, especially when you have work in other classes too. Without proper organization it can turn into a real mountain of papers that will eventually start coming down if you don't take care of everything when it needs to be done. The English Department at the University of Kansas is a well established program with many facilities, such as the writer's corner located in every library, available to English majors as well as any other student looking for an ideal writing atmosphere. These places are great for getting a lot of work done at once and have been a godsend when I can't concentrate on my schoolwork at home. The curriculum has a variety of choices all leading to success in the major. Students can choose to focus there studies on their strengths or refine some neglected practices in the art with options ranging from creative writing to Shakespearian literature. The student advisors in the English Department are available on a regular basis and are extremely attentive to students with a real interest in their major. Many of the advisors are also professors so their availability is really important when it comes time to get some revisions done and they're aware of it. The campus newsletters and newspaper is a great way to explore the writing field and a step further would be to participate in the numerous writing contests or scholarship programs offered by the department.

We Are Basketball
Sports other than basketball at KU are basically put on the sidelines. Football has some support and people will usually attend them for fun but it doesn't have the same kind of energy basketball sparks on campus. Whenever there is a home basketball game it's impossible to get anywhere on campus because so many people attend them, whether they're students or not. Basketball games also generate the best parties, win or lose.

Make Friends With Your RA
Policies are very strict when it comes to drinking or drug use on campus or in the dorms. It had escalated to the point where police were escorted through the halls each night in the dorms if there was a case of alcohol or drug abuse. The RA's generally run the dorms so if you're caught with alcohol or drugs your fate is really in their hands because they can choose to either let it slide, get you kicked out, or call the cops on you. It's a good idea to get in good with your RA and make friends early because they'll be less likely to gun for you then. That being said you might as well do all that stuff out of the dorms because as long as it's not happening in the dorms they won't give it a second thought, they're just thinking about keeping that cushy job not being the bad guy.
