Health & Safety at Smith College

B+

Okay by Me

There have been a few incidents on campus where students' safety has been compromised but through no fault of Public Safety. Often it is because Smith is an open campus, but also through student error (e.g. propping doors, etc.). In my experience, the campus is well-lit in nearly all areas, Public Safety is friendly and responsive, and I feel safe walking around. The only time I really lock my door is for extended time out of the house or at night (you don't want the occasional weekend drunk to barge in on your restful sleep).

Guys & Girls at Smith College

Women's College With a Twist

There are women of all shapes, sizes, styles, and backgrounds at Smith. The boys were born female, but still awesome nonetheless--and vary as much as the women.

Greek Life at Smith College

N/A

No Greek Here!

We don't have Greek life at Smith, but our housing system operates as a combination of Greek housing and traditional dorming.

Academics at Smith College

A-

Many Options, Lots of Work

Smith offers tons of areas to study, but all come with a significant amount of work. The experience doesn't seem rewarding at the time, but it does later on. Most professors are not only extremely knowledgeable about their areas, but their overall departments, as well. Popular study areas include the Campus Center and Neilson Library, as well as house living rooms/studies.

Study of Women and Gender major

I'm a Study of Women and Gender (SWG) major with a concentration in Queer Studies. Some of my professors are leaders in their field, and the department often attracts incredible visiting professors. The workload can be trying—SWG is one of the few Smith majors that requires two seminars (two-hour classes one day a week, often with short papers, as well as a 20-25 page final paper). SWG is an excellent major for anyone wanting to work in women's health, rights, or law on the national AND international level. It's also good if you're looking for queer studies classes, as well.

Computers at Smith College

C

Network Speed Is Subpar

The Smith wired network can be painfully slow during peak usage hours, but it's speedy as anything at 3 a.m. The wireless network is a little better, but not available in all locations on campus.

Facilities at Smith College

A-

Founder's Will

Smith's founder stated in her will that all buildings and refurbished spaces had to be furnished and designed based on current aesthetics and styles. Because of this, there is a variety of architecture, as well as furnishings throughout campus. The Campus Center is actually located in the center of campus, where the cafe is a good place for a snack after checking your mail.

Campus Dining at Smith College

B+

One Plan, Eleven Dining Halls

Dining is included in room and board, and meals are served buffet-style in all the dining halls. Some dining halls only serve at specific meal times (e.g. Lamont only serves lunch and dinner). Meals are served at specific times of day, but there are no classes scheduled during those times. Comstock/Wilder is Asian-themed for dinner, and most other dining halls have the occasional theme dinner. Favorite theme nights include Caribbean, soul food, and noodle bowls.

Campus Housing at Smith College

A

Like Living With Women?

Smith housing is the best kind of housing you can find. They aren't dorms, they're houses. Most rooms are decently sized, with the exception of a few rooms scattered across campus. Many get involved in house community, and most remain in the same house all four years. Many first-years have roommates, but sophomores and up generally live in singles. There are common living rooms and studies in the houses, each room is wired for Internet, cable, and phones, and nearly all houses have hardwood floors.

Diversity at Smith College

B-

Depends on Your Minority

There is a variety of underprivileged/subordinated groups on campus: transgender students, students of color, differently abled students, lesbian/bisexual students, Republican/conservative students, Christian students, working-class students. While the students work hard to effect change and diversify the campus, only SOME minority groups are considered by the administration.

Nightlife at Smith College

B

On Campus Parties, Off-Campus Bars

There's a group/house-sponsored party nearly every weekend that admits with student IDs (not by age). Off-campus bars card, but many allow underage people to join their 21+ friends. To be honest, most in-town fun is had in the bars and with the consumption of alcohol.

Campus Strictness at Smith College

A

Honor Code, Say Whaaat?!

Academically, students are responsible for honesty and integrity in their work. There are no final exam proctors, and professors often don't stay in the room during in-class exams. As for drinking, there is an amnesty policy in place for underage drinkers. This means that if a student calls emergency for an underage drinker who is in need of medical attention, neither will receive disciplinary action further than a conversation with their Area Coordinator and the Wellness Director.

Parking at Smith College

B+

Just Inconvenient

Tickets are reasonable, but the money goes into a scholarship fund. Need for a car is very small. Students have free bus rides to and from the nearest mall and surrounding colleges during the academic year, and the campus itself is small. Parking availability is limited. There are a set number of green and yellow parking decals, and the only guarantee is to seniors.

Weather at Smith College

B

Snow Sucks

The only time it can get really bad here is in the deep snow. As long as you have a decent pair of boots and some coordination, it's no big deal, but classes rarely get canceled, and the snow can become ice or slush.

Overall Experience at Smith College

A+

Living the Good Life

I love Smith. I felt comfortable here to explore myself, my goals, and my academic options, and re-evaluate as necessary. It has the perfect balance of parties and academics for my taste, and the overall character and personality of the students makes it an interesting and stimulating environment. Sure, it has its pitfalls, but that's part of life. I wouldn't change anything about my school or the people in it.

Inside Scoop at Smith College

A-

Traditionally Traditional

Smith is all about the traditions. We still have afternoon tea in the houses once a week, people eat together as a house, there are individual tradition days that have been around for decades (even over a century), Convocation has its traditions, Commencement has it's traditions, individual houses have traditions, even student orgs have traditions. If you're the kind of person who likes to connect with where you are, this is certainly the place to do it--participate in the traditions!
