Academics at DePauw University

A+

Perfection

The academics are wonderful in all fields offered, including our very own School of Music, which I especially appreciate. The curriculum covers a lot, but is not overwhelming. The professors are always inviting the students to come to their long office hours and I feel comfortable talking to any of them. The perks of a small school include the availability of professors. My workload consists of a lot of reading and essays, which take time, but is possible to complete in the time provided. The registration process went by with ease. Special study options and popular study areas are never-ending, despite the size of the campus. I have several different study spots and tend to change them up each week to add variety.

Campus Strictness at DePauw University

A+

Unrestricted

I do not feel restricted by any means. The beauty of college is living on my own, and I do not feel as if I am still attached to a leash. When students become to rowdy or underage drinking is present, the school jumps in immediately. I really appreciate this because it can be disturbing at times. Though those who are drinking and partying too obnoxiously may become upset about getting into trouble, but they are asking for it by being irresponsible and inconsiderate.

Overall Experience at DePauw University

A+

Beautiful First Impressions

I love everything about DePauw so far. My classes are not overwhelming and I am comfortable talking to my professor when things are not moving as smoothly as I would like. The campus is beautiful and I constantly see landscaping or cleaning going on, which is not a disturbance at all, but something to be admired about the university. The food, though it needs variety at times, is close and delicious. My roommate was the perfect match, and although I am on the fourth floor of my building, it is quiet when I would like it to be and I am very close with all the girls on my floor. The social life is wonderful, though the School of Music students tend to be restricted to socialize with one another because of their heavy schedules and practice times. It is not a problem however, because I have sought out music students to befriend them so that I may seek out music opportunities in the future. I appreciate how DePauw handles Winter Term as well, providing the students with several individualized options. I love everything about DePauw and would not change a thing!

Athletics at DePauw University

A

Depauwthletics

Though I am not personally involved in many sports, the facilities are open for non-athletes as well as athletes. The facilities are very nice, though the work-out/weight room is a bit small for the amount of students that use it. Aside from this weight room, however, there is plenty of room elsewhere for practices, workouts, or other activities. As a small, private school in tiny Greencastle, Indiana, we don't really attract too many exceptional athletes, but we do pretty well with what we have. Our teams usually defeat our rivals, which is excellent. However, our football team is awful and the amount of fan support at these games is limited to the amount of alcohol present at the tailgates. School spirit is very high aside from this, however, and the close sense of community we all share during sports events is incredible. Whether we win or lose the game/match/meet, we win as a community.

Local Atmosphere at DePauw University

B+

Small Town Girl

Greencastle is a nice, historical town, and would be a nice place to retire in. In regards to college students, it does not have too much crazy fun things to offer. There are some great homestyle restaurants and cafes, but in terms of things to do, there is a tiny museum of the town. Campus makes up the majority of the town besides, and there is enough offered on campus at all times that the lack of a town does not affect life too much. I appreciate the lack of distractions and ways to spend all my savings!

Transportation at DePauw University

A

Just Walk, You Will Survive

Everything is so close on such a small campus that walking anywhere is not a big deal, even in the the midst of a blizzard. Also, the fresh air is nice and campus is always so beautiful that the walk is enjoyable. If you are absolutely unable to walk, riding a bike is also easy, though the ride is short and having to lock and unlock the bike is more a a hassle than walking. Then, on late nights if you've partied too hard or it is too cold for your skimpy skirts, SafeRide is a nice way to get you from place to place. However, SafeRide tends to be very busy, especially on the weekend and cold nights, so it is not always an option. I would prefer SafeRide to be a bus system during the weekends because it is frustrating when it is leaving from where you are and going to where you are going, but you are not allowed on the vehicle because your call is not being answered.
