Small - but Has the Potential to Be So Much Bigger
Without a car, Hofstra can seem very small. But the university has a shuttle system to the huge Roosevelt Field Mall, Target, Stop & Shop, and also the train stations which makes it really easy to get into NYC. The area surrounding Hofstra is potentially dangerous - and I don't suggest going out alone at night - but overall, Hofstra is what you make of it. I suggest getting into NYC as much as possible and utilizing the shuttle system if you do not have a car of your own. Taxis are always an option as well.

Pretty Safe
Hofstra is pretty safe. The campus is fenced off from the rest of Hempstead, so it is really hard for any burglars or robbers to get on campus late at night. If you are living off campus, I would be a little more careful. There have been a few robberies to people walking around Hempstead late at night. Public Safety is always just a call away. I feel safe on campus and off campus as long as I'm smart about it.
