Safety Level Depends on Location
Personally, I have not encountered any threats to my safety while on campus. I feel perfectly safe walking to and from the library on my own even at night. For those who feel more comfortable traveling in groups, the university has the SAFE program which consists of students who volunteer to walk others back to their homes, a late night taxi service, and various buses operating across campus. The University Police Department is also a constant presence on campus, especially in the more populated areas. I have heard that Madison has a heroin use problem, however, I myself have not witnessed any sort of drug sale or use. It truly depends on where you live and who you associate yourself with.

Plans Are Great, Food Is Sufficient
I use the housing foods account to purchase food at the dining halls across campus through my wiscard. There are plenty of locations around campus that also accept Campus Cash like Memorial and Union South. Some of the options are very heavy in calories but most dining halls offer a salad bar and sandwich stand. Overall, the food is alright but it's nothing like cooking from home.

It's Wisconsin Weather at Its Finest
Okay, so we're in Wisconsin, it's bound to snow at some point. Luckily, the transportation (buses) allow students to avoid the bad weather if they wish (however, on cold/snowy/rainy days the buses get really crowded and you have to wait for an open bus to arrive). I personally don't think it's that bad; they are really good at clearing sidewalks and if you know your way around campus you can generally avoid bad weather by walking through buildings. But we don't just have snow here! When the weather's nice the best place to be is by the lake, going for a run or just hanging out on the terrace with friends.
