Adorable Small Town
No one is going to say that Northfield is a metropolis, but if what you're looking for is a college town, you can't do better. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops to frequent, boutique stores and farmers markets to shop at, etc, and if you really are craving a city, Minneapolis/St. Paul is close and easy to get to with lots of professional sports, concerts, plays and the like. The college also tries super hard to provide opportunities to get up to the cities for events or just general enjoyment of city life. Cows, colleges, and contentment: what more could you want?

Depends What You Mean by Diversity...
Carleton has tried really hard in the past few years to recruit international and multicultural students, but there still are quite a few white kids around campus. On the other hand, diversity in other aspects such as religion and socioeconomic status abounds, a lot more than a lot of people realize, in fact. Very very welcoming and supportive atmosphere for LGBT students with lots of very visible events on a campus packed with allies. In terms of political diversity, it doesn't exist. Conservatives are stamped on.

Far Away but Unnecessary
Really, there is no need for a car on campus, but lots of people bring one anyway. If you don't have an excuse for having your car here, that means that they will make you park at the far end of campus, which can be frustrating. However, its easy to get a parking space (whether close or far away), and the cost of parking is reasonable. Freshman are highly discouraged from cars, which is fine because everyone has friends with cars anywhere.
