Solid Academics
No matter how many complaints I may have about the student body or lack of night life at W&M I can't deny the academic excellence. As a double major in a science and arts I got to experience a variety of course areas and found my professors in most areas to be challenging and engaging. Especially if you come in with AP credits you'll have a lot of leeway to choose classes that appeal to you as opposed to following a set track. It might be hard to get straight A's but getting by with B's is really no problem.

Colonial Thrilliamsburg...
The College of William & Mary is in a bubble isolated from the community and society in general. Our close proximity to colonial williamsburg makes tourism the main priority of the area. This leads to a frustrating parking situation, expensive off campus housing with lots of regulations, and old rich neighbors who suck the fun out of everything. There are a total of three "delis" or bars where students drink and only about 25% of the students go out regularly so you see the same people all the time. Cops break up almost every decent party. It is certainly not a typical college experience. On the positive side, it's a pretty safe place to party and live and there is a sweet outlet mall close by.

Mediocre
Sports are not the main priority of most students here. That being said, it can be pretty fun to go to the games because most students that attend are spirited and the athletes are among the most normal people at the school. Athletes get almost no special treatment as far as class preference or academic breaks. I've found that even star athletes are academically capable. Surprisingly, most students are in relatively good shape. Club and intramural sports are very popular and the rec center is excellent.

HUMID
Temperatures are for the most part mild and bearable but being so close to the coast means that it is humid a lot of the time. There are also ridiculous storms and our drainage system on campus is terrible so rain boots are a must. We get snow once in a while. Weather during the spring is usually beautiful and all of the trees on campus make it lively.

Better Option
Most students actually live on campus so there's not as much competition for off campus housing. It can be pretty expensive depending on the proximity to campus that you're looking for. Overall it's worth it because you can get away with a lot more off campus...

Parking Passes Are Outrageous
Parking passes are ridiculously expensive and even after forking out $180 per semester you will still probably get multiple tickets throughout the year because spaces are really restricted. There is a free student run shuttle called steer clear that gives free rides to students on weekend nights. Very few people utilize the bus system. Also...it's fun to get the trolley's to take you places when you've been drinking (only in Williamsburg...)

Not Bad
Many upperclassmen live on campus because there are a variety of appealing and affordable options. Staff seems to want to make the on campus options appealing to have more control over every aspect of student's lives. Most RA's are pretty chill about drinking in dorms as long as it's not ridiculously loud/out of control. Dorms are so close to classes that it's easy to stumble out of bed 5 minutes before class and get there on time.

Accepting
W&M is extremely accepting of every variety of sexual orientation. Our homecoming queen was a transgendered pre-op male> female a few years ago. There are also a lot of international students. I ended up with an extremely diverse group of friends but many people do stick to similar types. I love that it's a school that encourages individual expression and there are a lot of different student activist groups. There is a huge liberal presence, and conservatives/republicans are hated on sometimes.

JOKE
The worst part of my experience at WM by far. There is some truth to the "it's as fun as you make it" philosophy but you have to work pretty hard to find fun places to go and cool people to go with. In retrospect, I wish I had gone greek because it's possible to establish yourself and have a good time without pledging but it would have been a lot easier. There are a total of 3 bars...but that is actually enough because so few students can make it out of the library long enough to enjoy themselves at night. On the plus side- most off campus parties and the bars are basically in walking distance.

Pros and Cons
Finding someone attractive and laid back can be a challenge, but if you do they are bound to be intelligent and have a high earning potential. Gays and Lesbians have a lot better odds here than most other schools probably, our gay scene is pretty big proportionally. Most students are in relatively good shape (not partying much will do that...) On the downside the school is small enough that you pretty much know the relationship history and sexual past of most people. For how liberal the school is, students dress pretty conservatively and girls get a lot of flack for showing skin.
