Apartments are clean, abundant, and well located. Prices for a one room apartment in the Foggy Bottom area typically range from $750 - $2,500 per month. I recommend finding at least one roomate with whom to split rent.

It's a City...
As with all urban areas, crime exists. Foggy Bottom is one of the safest neighborhoods in DC, but crime still happens. However, GWU is very good about sending out crime alerts via email, and DC police is responsive.

Walk, Walk, Walk!
Most things of interest in DC are within walking distance given nice weather. It is a 40 minute walk to U Street, a 30 minute walk to the Verizon Center and Chinatown, a 10 minute walk to Georgetown, and a 5 minute walk to the World Bank and IMF. That which is not accessible by foot (Airports, baseball and football stadiums, etc.) are metro accessible. The metro is not insanely expensive.
