Health & Safety at CUNY Hunter College

B+

Campus Is Safe - Though

I've never felt unsafe anywhere at Hunter - to get into the Dorms you have to show ID, and all guests must show an ID and be signed in on the computer system. Though that system isn't in place at the Hunter Main campus, it seems as though they're working toward a system where you'd have to swipe in to get into the Hunter buildings (many other colleges in New York City already have a similar system in place). The one major concern is petty theft, especially at the dorm. You might feel like it's safe to leave your things out, it is after all, your home, but since everyone has singles and only a small portion of Hunter students actually live at the dorm, there isn't the same sense of community you would find in the dorms of other college classes. Leave your laptop in the common room or your pots and dishes in the kitchen, and they may very well be stolen!

Off-Campus Dining at CUNY Hunter College

A+

It's NYC! -- there are tons of great off-campus dining options

Of course there are tons of great off-campus dining options around Hunter - both the Brookdale campus and the main campus. Alot of places in Lower Manhattan offer student discounts no matter where you go to school, and the price range for food depends on where you go - it's easy to get a cheap meal, but if you have the cash for something higher quality, that's also readily available. And the variety of foods in NYC is unrivaled!

Weather at CUNY Hunter College

A+

New York City Weather, Great Variation W/O Too Many Extremes.

My title really says it all - you're never really going to have to worry about extreme weather limiting your activities - its NYC, even if you're stuck inside, you'll be able to find something to do, and there's plenty to keep you entertained in the dorms. When its nice out, Hunter is right by Central Park, a great place to hang out!

Local Atmosphere at CUNY Hunter College

A+

NYC -- the city that never sleeps

How could the local atmosphere be any better? In the city that never sleeps, you'll find friends and acceptance whether you stay up all night partying or studying. New York City's liberal leanings mean a very open accepting study body and faculty. There are tons of other colleges in the city with other students you can connect with. The shopping is fabulous, the cultural opportunities are limitless, and for those party animals, the nightlife is exciting.

Campus Strictness at CUNY Hunter College

A-

Only Down Side Is the Dry Campus at Brookdale

There aren't really many restrictions - you are allowed a good amount of overnight visits during the week, and there aren't really any restricting rules if you don't live in the dorms. However, if you do, and you're 21+, you might be annoyed by the fact that you still can't have alcohol. Also, you can only sign in 2 guests at once, which is less than some schools in the city, and some people feel isn't enough.

Parking at CUNY Hunter College

N/A

What Parking?

It's NYC, take the 6 train to "68th St. -HUNTER COLLEGE". The subway means everything is easy to get to, so leave the car in Ohio.

Academics at CUNY Hunter College

A+

Amazing Academics

Going to a large, public university, I was surprised at how small all my classes were, and how attentive and willing to help my professors were. They encourage us to come to their office hours and really help you if you ask for it!

Computers at CUNY Hunter College

B

Computers Everywhere

Really. On every floor of every building where there are classrooms, there are computers available to use, and you can almost always find one free. There are also a ton in the library, as well as computer labs where you can print. Wireless is available throughout the Hunter campus, however, at Brookdale, it can be a little slow and unreliable.

Nightlife at CUNY Hunter College

A-

NYC NIGHTLIFE

Unfortunately, there aren't really many parties at school, but because you are in this city, there's still plenty of opportunities to party - many bars/clubs are 18+ so even if you're underage you can find somewhere to go out and have a good time if that's what you're info. As always, subway gets you anywhere and everywhere you need to go.

Campus Housing at CUNY Hunter College

B-

Upside: Living by Yourself, Downside: Not Great Community

Most Hunter kids don't live in the dorms. They're not that bad: small, but at least you have a room all to yourself. Community isn't necessarily great but if you reach out to people it can be. Game room, sporting facilities get an A+ but the wireless can sometimes suck. Small dining area only open on weekdays.

Drug Safety at CUNY Hunter College

B

Lot of Smokers, Lots of Poeple 21+

There are ALOT of smokers at Hunter - in nice weather you'll see them congregated around this ugly black sculpture in front of Hunter West. Also alot of Hunter students are older than 21, so there is alot of drinking.

Facilities at CUNY Hunter College

A

Library has a wide selection

I love the Hunter library, though it isnt very pretty, it has a wide selection. If your just looking for a place to study, CUNY students have access to all CUNY libraries, so hit up the Baruch library- it's right near the hunter dorms.

Transportation at CUNY Hunter College

A

The 6 Train

is basically the only option, but a good one. just get a monthly unlimited metro card for 89 dollars, and your set not only for getting to and from school, but for going anywhere in the city.
