Its Ok
I stayed with a family that I didn't know before and I ate with them most of time so I'm not quite familiar but I've been to dining halls a few times and they were alright.

I'm a Korean American Myself.
there were used to be not that many Asian people until couple years ago. Though, after the flood that hit Iowa about three years ago, the school seemed to accept more international students. SKETCH

Surround Yourself With Right People.
your life in Iowa is going to depend largely on the people you meet
there isn't very much to do in Iowa so make sure you get to know with the right people.
It snows a lot and is really cold in Iowa.

Drinking Is More Popular
although it all depends on who you hang out with, I personally felt like there were more of alcoholics than potheads.

I Plan to Have One.
I'm planning to study actuarial science and went to one of the meetings. On that day they had a presentations of people who did internships during summer break. It sounded amazing so I'm planning to do so too.

Hot and Cold
it's really hot during the summer and extremely cold during winter
it also snows a lot but the classes rarely get cancelled.
If you're looking for nice weather I wouldn't recommend Iowa

Perkins
I like perkins mainly because it's open 24/7 and I usually don't sleep until 5 AM or so.
so if you like to go out to eat late, perkins would be the best place.

I'm an actuarial science student. and U of Iowa is one of the top schools in the US. We have excellent professors and lots of Internship opportunities.

Okay.
the apts are okay. If you want to live right next to the library, the cost might be little expensive but if you're okay with walking about 10-15 minutes to school, you can get pretty good apt with cheap cost. but then those apartments are on party street so it might be little loud on weekends.
