Academics at Goucher College

A-

very good academics

While Goucher College is not one of the most difficult colleges to get accepted into, it has very good academics. Every professor that I have had during my time at Goucher has been wonderful-- passionate and knowledgeable about their field of study, helpful and attentive. Professors, from my experience, really care about their students learning. The small class sizes are also great-- one of my English classes only had 6 students in it and, while it was very relaxed, advanced me a lot as a writer and allowed me to complete my English requirement early. I have noticed that while their are a reasonable amount of intelligent, but lazy, students at Goucher who do not have an interest in academia, and merely work enough to "get by," there are also a lot of hard workers. If you are an avid learner, looking to learn a lot and work hard, then this is the college for you. Just keep in mind that there are not that many majors to choose from.

Campus Dining at Goucher College

A+

great food

I am a vegan who lives in New York City an I have to say that I am very pleased with the food at Goucher College. While I am some complaints (the lack of soy milk in all of the dining halls, for instance!) I am generally very satisfied. Goucher has two main dining halls-- Stimson and Heubeck. Stimson is much larger and has a wide variety of food-- pasta made to your liking, pizza, stir fry, meat on the grill, salad, sandwiches, and different hot food depending on the day. Heubeck is the more vegetarian friendly dining hall of the two and specializes in Asian food. I, personally, think that the quality food in Heubeck is equal, if not superior, to that of many good restaurants in NYC. In addition to that we have Pearlstone, where you can get chicken fingers, sandwiches, hamburgers, etc to stay or to go. It isn't the healthiest, but you can also buy hummus, large containers of soy milk, soy pudding, vegan noodles and choose from a wide variety of granola bars. Alices, which is located in the library, is open until 3 am and serves coffee, pastries, smoothies (not very good) and a limited variety of sandwiches. All in all, I would say that the campus dining is greatly superior to that of most other colleges and universities.

Campus Strictness at Goucher College

A

not strict at all

The public safety officers at Goucher College are not very strict at all. When caught with the possession of alcohol or marijuana, students are basically let off the hook-- they would get their substance taken away and maybe get a warning or a "court case" (within the college) that would likely result in a very minor punishment. Students are constantly walking around campus drinking beer out of the can and sometimes even smoking pot and rarely get caught or have to suffer a serious punishment. I got in trouble for having a party in my dorm room my freshman year, because of a noise complaint, and a "court case" was set up for me and my two roommates with the public safety, but that was never followed up on. I, personally, love this relaxed atmosphere. While, the campus is still very safe, it allows college students to have a good amount of freedom and to be treated like the adults they are.

Drug Safety at Goucher College

C+

average amount of drug use

Depending on who your friends are at Goucher, you may perceive the drug scene differently. If you look at the general Goucher population, the majority does not do drugs. There are many, many people at Goucher who do not use any kind of drug. There are also many people who limit their drug use to a minimal consumption of alcohol. Being that Goucher is a very liberal and, in the words of some, a "hippie school," there ARE a fair amount of students who smoke pot regularly. In my group of friends, almost everyone does. It is extremely easy to obtain marijuana on campus, but if you are not into that then it is very easy to meet others who feel similarly. While most people at Goucher don't do hard drugs (being LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, etc) it is occasionally possible to find these drugs on campus. It is usually, however, pretty difficult. A lot of kids at Goucher also take Adderall to help them study and do homework.

Nightlife at Goucher College

B-

it is what you make it

Many students complain about the nightlife at Goucher. However, it truly is what you make it. I am from New York City and in the city I go to a lot of parties and clubs. Before I came to Goucher I was really worried about the lack of parties and the "weird" "socially awkward" people that I was going to meet. I expected Goucher to be full of anime obsessed students who were only interested in playing zombie roleplay. However, I have met a lot of other kids at Goucher who are just as interested in partying at Goucher as I am. While their are not huge parties or fraternities, there are always many games of beer pong and flip cup going on on Friday and Saturday nights. It is also really easy to throw your own parties, which many students don't realize. My friends and I are some of the few students who have taken the initiative to do this and have had quite a few successful parties that haven't gotten busted. I know a lot of people who have strobe lights and black lights and there are always mini dance parties going on. If your more into "chilling," there are also usually groups of people out relaxing and drinking with a hookah on the quad or in the Froelicher courtyard. And if you aren't interested in staying on campus (I admit, it can get a little old sometimes) you can go to Johns Hopkins or concerts in Baltimore. While many students complain about the boring nightlife, it really is what you make it.

Local Atmosphere at Goucher College

D+

boring local atmosphere

I live in New York City, so Towson is pretty boring to me. It is very gentrified and there is not much to do except go to the one movie theater (which has a very small selection, limited to big crowd pleasing Blockbusters), the mall, or one of the few crappy hookah bars. There are restaurants but none are anything special-- chain restaurants like TGI Fridays, the Cheesecake Factory and PF Changs, pizza joints, a smoothie place, etc. There ARE a few decent Thai restaurants, however, and a Persian restaurant but it is a ten minute drive from campus. However, there is a Superfresh, a Trader Joes, and a Barnes and Nobel right within walking distance, so you pretty much have access to all of your basic necessities. Nothing special...just middle class suburbia.

Computers at Goucher College

A+

great computers

We have a decent sized computer lab in the library (considering the small student body) with great, new Mac computers and PCs for those kickin' it old school.
