Diversity at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

B-

Diversity

My high school contained 70% Asian students, so coming to RPI where most of my peers were white was an adjustment. While RPI seems to fail to achieve a good balance of races, there definitely is an attempt and to be honest, I think they do alright considering we are in the northeast. I have found however, that the lack of racial diversity doesn't hinder diversity of other means. Everyone I met here comes from such a strange and different background than everyone else, and those differences create a stronger diversity and acceptance among the community.

Campus Strictness at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

C+

Dr. Jackson's Iron Fist

RPI doesn't see a lot of misbehavior that would call for unnecessary strictness so this is a difficult question to answer. On April 20th, (the well known day of marijuana smoking) campus security stood by while over a hundred students lit up their joints and let it happen. On any other day they are extremely strict about on campus smoking of any kind. Most of the strictness comes from our president who is constantly taking away freedoms older students used to enjoy, like using your housing scholarship off campus and not being forced to live in a dorm first and second years.

Weather at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

C

From Sunny California to Gloomy Troy

My hometown is San Jose, CA where we see no snow and mostly temperatures above 60 year round. Coming to New York was a depressing shock. One of my best friends is from Los Angeles and he had to buy a Happy Light to provide him with vitamin D during the winter because the lack of sunlight was making him depressed. It is upsetting to me that I have less than a month left before I leave Troy and it is still miserable on a daily basis, but I am spoiled coming from California. The snow, while it is a hassle, is a fun experience and I don't mind it.
