Diversity at Hampshire College

A+

Diversity at Hampshire

Hampshire has a increasingly strong commitment to diversity. Not only does Hampshire have the Baldwin Scholars program, which gives full four year scholarships to African American and Hispanic students, but it also reaches out to the international community and has an immense amount of geographical diversity. Hampshire has students from 48 states, and had an incoming class 25% non white students, which is phenomenal when compared to other small liberal arts schools. Hampshire has a very strong GLBT community which is celebrated by all members of the community. Hampshire is totally wheelchair accessible and even has a program in the Lemelson design center where students work on assistive technology designs, one student made a wheelchair skateboard. Diversity is a constant priority at Hampshire, something which both the students and the administration care about.

Greek Life at Hampshire College

A+

Greek Life

Hampshire College does not have greek life. Instead they have upper class students living in "mods" which are apartment style housing communities. Each one has its own name; Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. Each apartment community has its own distinct architectural style of either rural, urban, or suburban. Each of these housing communities has their own themed parties and events, so you get the benefits of the greek life party, without the exclusivity. At Hampshire, everyone is invited to all the parties

Campus Strictness at Hampshire College

A+

Campus Strictness

Hampshire College is amazingly tolerant of their students. They understand that Hampshire students are individual and self motivated and for that reason almost all of the buildings are left open at night and students are encouraged to organize activities on their own. If a cop were to see someone drinking they would simply as them to pour their drink out. The same policy goes for smoking cigarettes or marijuana. Marijuana is decriminalized in the state of Massachusetts so therefore the police cannot get you in trouble for it beyond a small fine. The campus is extremely safe despite the relaxed environment. Public safety officers are always around if any student needs assistance. So are the student trained Emergency Medical Team, who will immediately respond to any students need.

Campus Housing at Hampshire College

A+

Housing Policy

Hampshire College has a great housing policy. There are two dormitory buildings available for first year students to live in. Each of these dormitory buildings has free laundry and is only a two minute walk from the dining commons. The rooms are 90% single rooms, each with a huge 4' by 4' window. All the hallways are co-ed, unless you request a single gender hall. The rooms are extremely spacious and come furnished with a desk, dresser, chair, and closet. The social atmosphere is great. Each hallway has a lounge which is equipped with two couches, a television with cable, a full sized fridge, an oven, and a sink. In addition every lounge has a balcony large enough to put the sofas outside - which is very popular in the fall and the spring when the weather at Hampshire is beautiful. If you do not want to live in the dormitories there are three other housing communities on Hampshire; Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. Each has their own architectural style. Greenwich is near Hampshires farm and close to the soccer fields. Prescott is home to the Tavern, a lounge and music space on campus. And Enfield has the community health collaborative where you can get free chair messages. It also has mixed nuts, Hampshire longest running student business on campus, a store where you can purchase eggs, milk, and other products for your kitchen.

Drug Safety at Hampshire College

A+

Drug Scene

As with every college, drugs are used and available at Hampshire. The most important difference at Hampshire is that there is no sense of peer pressure around using drugs. Because Hampshire is such a difficult school academically, many people do not engage in drug or alcohol usage at all, and this is completely tolerated and respected by the members of campus that do engage in drug usage.

Overall Experience at Hampshire College

Hampshire College - the BEST College EVER

Hampshire College is such an amazing school I don't even know where to begin. First and foremost Hampshires geographical location makes it extremely unique. It is part of the five college consortium with Amherst College, Umass Amherst, Mt Holyoke, and Smith College, all wonderful schools where Hampshire students can take classes. Hampshire students on average take 8 classes at five college schools over their four years at Hampshire. Since Hampshire is a small school, with a student body of around 1400, we get the advantages of the small close knit community, and the resources of the five college area. The schools are all connected by the largest free bus system in the USA, and therefore you can get to class in Amherst in 7 minutes from Hampshire. The buses run until 3am on friday nights, so many five college students will go between the colleges to check out the different parties. In this way Hampshire gains all the benefits of being a large school, while retaining the personality of a small environment. The professors at Hampshire are fantastic, they are extremely knowledgeable and very accessible. They are always available to talk before and after class about class material or anything else that you are interested in. I also love the advising system at Hampshire. From your first day of Hampshire you are paired with an advisor that is the professor of one of the classes you selected for your first semester. Because of this you develop a great relationship with your professor and your advisor. By the time you are a senior you will have a committee of three advisors, something that no other school in the country can offer. I have loved all the classes that I have taken at Hampshire. All of the students are engaged in the material and excited to be learning about the subject that they are studying. Hampshire classes are a lot of work but there are many resources on campus to help students out who are having any trouble with their studies. In summation, I am in love with Hampshire College, I would never transfer to any other school. I am so proud to be getting my diploma from Hampshire and going on to graduate school in law and economics
