I'm a biology major, and I feel like I'm studying constantly while everyone studying social sciences is playing video games and drinking. I'm a good, hardworking student, but I felt like the workload was such that I did not have time to lead a balanced lifestyle. I would expect such a workload at a more prestigious school, but not here.

really pretty bad
Puget sound is a liberal, fairly wealthy and active community, but it is a bubble within Tacoma. There are those that say Tacoma is a high-end, student oriented community, but there really is nothing to do there. There are a few cafes to study in and decently priced diners nearby, but unless you have a car or have a friend who can drive you, you're stuck walking a mile or so through the incessant rain to get there.
Tacoma is really just a sub-par suburban area that lacks any real culture or sense of community. Yes, Point Defiance is nice, the glass museum is pleasant, and Seattle is a half hour away. But getting to Seattle and back is a full day's trip, and when you're busy studying on the weekends, you don't have time to take a whole day off to go camping or into Seattle. The glass museum may be interesting to visit once or twice, and Point Defiance is nice if the weather isn't awful (which it usually is).
Overall, I'd say that the local atmosphere is one of the worst aspects of my experience at the University of Puget Sound.

C
kick-backs on the weekends and lots of weed
The nightlife as a freshman consists--from what I experienced and observed--of getting drunk, walking to off-campus houses rented by upperclassmen, drinking more, then coming back to the dorms and making a good deal of noise.
Yes, this is a normal college pasttime. But unfortunately the school provides no other options for students who don't choose this particular route. The school provides very few activities to deter its students from spending every night of the weekend drinking, and Tacoma completely lacks any other entertaining ways to spend this time.

dreary
I'm from California, and though I expected a lot of rain, I didn't expect a) maybe 10 days of sun total second semester and b) temperatures that rarely, if ever, rise above 60 degrees.
The weather simply discourages activity, so though Puget Sound attracts many outdoor-oriented students, most never end up spending time outdoors because the weather is too unpleasant.
